Job Description

Job Title: Writing Tutor Effective Date: August 15, 2023

Job Summary
The Writing Tutor will provide exceptional knowledge of language, grammar, and composition to EMU graduate, seminary, SPI and ADCP students at EMU Harrisonburg and Lancaster. The tutor will assist graduate level students in developing writing strategies as well as student workshops in various writing styles and formats. Writing tutors are responsible for holistic issues of academic writing development, organization, critical thinking, argument, and coherence. This includes but is not limited to, sentence and paragraph structure, grammar rules, argument logic, critical analysis, citation formatting, and forms of academic and professional writing.
Duties/Responsibilities
  • Help students understand and explain their assignments, and learn to organize arguments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Guide students through the writing process – prewriting, drafting, revisions, proofreading & editing.
  • Use guiding questions to assist students to think critically.
  • Meet with students individually and in small groups to help students with their writing process.
  • Introduce students to EMU’s writing resources through presentations.
  • Research and develop writing and reading aids.
  • Participate in tutoring assessments.
  • Serve as an in-class resource for specific graduate writing assignments.
Required Skills/Abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with a wide variety of constituents.
  • Exhibits punctuality in appointments and classroom events and shows flexibility to last minute changes.
  • Ability to use a PC and software such as Windows, Microsoft Office (specifically Word and Excel), and Google.
  • Ability to understand instructions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of writing formats such at; APA and MLA.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to have a professional and neat appearance.
  • Must show evidence of excellent writing knowledge and skills and be competent with online tutoring services.
  • Ability to operate commonly used office equipment such as a copy machine, printer, phone, etc.
  • Ability to set goals, prioritize and organize job tasks and workload in order to meet deadlines and ability to complete work in a timely manner and communicate progress routinely with the Writing & Communications Program Director.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills for assisting faculty, staff, and students.
Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in English, English Literature, Writing Studies, or related degree area required. Experience mentoring or tutoring students is preferred.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and use hands and fingers, to handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The employee must occasionally travel to meetings and conferences off campus, which may include some overnight travel.
