DIVISION: The Nelson Golf and Sports Club (Formerly Las Colinas Sports Club)

DEPARTMENT: Golf Course Maintenance

REPORTS TO: Director of Agronomy

STATUS: Exempt


ABOUT THE NELSON GOLF AND SPORTS CLUB


The Nelson Golf and Sports Club in Irving, Texas is located on over 400 acres of pure luxury. Ranked among America’s leading venues, TPC and Cottonwood Valley are part of our comprehensive, award-winning Dallas golf club and resort. TPC proudly hosted the Byron Nelson Championship, an annual PGA TOUR event for 35 years and is an 18-hole, par 70 course measuring 7,166 yards from the championship tees. The 18-hole, par 71 Cottonwood Valley golf course measures 7,120 yards.


As a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, the two private golf courses have an array of native and ornamental plants and wildlife inventory. The Agronomy Department honors include the Overall and National Private Recipient of the 2017 Environmental Leaders in Golf Awards (ELGA), presented annually by GCSAA and Golf Digest.


The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for the maintenance, operations, and management of the golf course and practice facilities. This position carefully manages the maintenance inputs to the golf course while conserving and protecting natural resources. The Golf Course Superintendent directly influences the playing areas and landscapes with which golfers interact.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND SKILLS REQUIRED


  • Knowledge of budgeting and expense management.
  • GCSAA Member required.
  • Required to obtain a Texas State Pesticide License.
  • Supervising the construction and maintenance of the golf course(s).
  • Supervising the maintenance and repair of golf course maintenance equipment.
  • A strong business aptitude and passion for the golf business.
  • Thorough understanding of the rules and strategies of the game of golf. A high degree of administrative and executive ability, especially in terms of problem solving and decision-making.
  • Computer skills including Word, Excel, and Google sheets is preferred.
  • A 2-year college degree is required.
  • Bentgrass management in transition zone
  • Highly organized and efficient with a high attention to detail.
  • Participation in continuing education opportunities such as seminars, workshops, correspondence courses, field days and trade shows.
  • 4+ years turf grass management experience required.
  • Supervisory, coaching and staff development experience required.
  • Advanced knowledge of agronomy and turfgrass management practices.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES


The golf course superintendent assumes responsibility for managing and maintaining golf course properties, which may include:


  • Keeps accurate and complete records on payroll, inventory, weather data, maintenance procedures, pesticide applications, etc.
  • Communicates regularly with other members of the top management group to discuss activities, goals, plans and member/customer input.
  • Oversees the scheduling and routing of personnel and equipment to accomplish the work. The superintendent frequently inspects the golf course and assists in the maintenance of related areas to evaluate management standards and effect changes in management programs.
  • Acquires equipment and purchases necessary supplies to maintain the golf course and other properties.
  • Open spaces, wooded areas, unused acreage and areas outside the perimeter fence.
  • Other properties as specified by the superintendent's supervisor.
  • Sod nurseries.
  • Practice facilities.
  • Construction, renovation and/or reconstruction of such properties, whether performed by maintenance staff or outside contractors.
  • The golf course(s).
  • Assist in preparing the annual budgets for the maintenance and capital improvement of course properties. The superintendent formulates the annual maintenance and capital budgets to implement board policies established in accordance with the long-range plan and defined maintenance standards.
  • Interviews, hires, trains and supervises a staff of employees for maintaining the properties.
  • Plans all maintenance and project work, applying his or her agronomic and administrative expertise to achieve the agreed-upon maintenance standards and long-range goals.
  • Clubhouse grounds and landscaping.
  • Maintenance equipment.


PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Able to withstand outside working conditions.
  • Able to make decisions to benefit the company.
