The GIS Specialist will design the GIS editing structure and perform geodatabase administrative tasks, along with providing technical assistance, mapping assistance and act as a GIS resource for all cemetery departments, especially Horticulture, Cemetery Development, and Cemetery & Visitor Services.

The GIS Specialist will work with the Director of Cemetery Development to identify areas for new burials and other possible developments that will enhance the historic character of the landscape. This position will conduct field survey work to install, verify and/or correct the location of new burial lots, post lot corners, and place numbers at graves. The position will use ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Enterprise to maintain and update map features and dataset, map new sales areas, create sales plans and maps for brochures and website. Other key duties will be correcting errors and refining existing basemap layers, importing AutoCAD maps into the GIS system and extending the GIS capabilities of the cemetery using existing data models.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Integrate landscape and building changes from professional designers and surveyors into Mount Auburn’s base maps and plans.
  • Install, verify and/or correct through field survey, the location of burial lots. Post lot corners and place numbers at graves.
  • Train co-workers to provide backup coverage.
  • Produce and update maps for Cemetery & Visitor Services, Cemetery Operations, Horticulture, Preservation, and other departments as needed including mobile apps and website.
  • Work in different scaled drawings and plans for updating base maps and incorporating building plans into digital map systems.
  • Perform geodatabase administration tasks and oversee editing workflows
  • Monitor other mapping systems (OSM, Google Maps) to ensure that Mount Auburn’s boundary, roads and paths remain properly mapped.
  • Map all new lots, sub-lots and grave spaces.
  • Create sales plans for new sales inventory.
  • Support GIS infrastructure, including Arc Enterprise Server, Arc Portal, ArcGIS Online, ArcMap and Arc Pro installations.
  • Develop and provide budget for newly created GIS department.
  • Serve as backup for recording new burials, memorials and/or pertinent lot information in the Cemetery Management System.
  • Provide training and helpdesk support for geospatial applications.
  • Work closely with the Director of Cemetery Development on the creation of new inventory and keeping all maps up-to-date. Identify areas for in-fill graves and other possible developments that will enhance the historic character of the landscape.
  • Assist with the creation of presentation materials for internal meetings and public forums.
  • Work with and support use of remote data collection tools and applications.

As with all Cemetery staff, assist with any cemetery business including special meetings, conferences, Friends events and public programs as needed.

Demonstrate responsible stewardship for the environment when planning and implementing all duties incorporated in job description

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:

  • Ability to edit and create data from a multitude of sources (paper documents, spreadsheets, hand written maps, GPS data, satellite and aerial imagery, etc.)
  • Excellent oral and written communication with ability to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical staff/management.
  • Scripting ability with structured query language (SQL) and Python required,
  • Able to work with and learn multiple databases, including Microsoft SQL Server
  • Must present a good professional image in dress, grooming and personal hygiene per the Cemetery’s dress code policy
  • Demonstrated ability of advanced GIS concepts, including data models, vector/raster analysis, coordinate systems and projections and cartographic design.
  • Facility with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) – ESRI-based (desktop and web) and AutoCAD
  • Ability to read, speak and write in English is required; Spanish is a plus
  • Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s preferred and 3-5 years’ work experience in GIS or GIS-related field (ecology, land use planning, etc.)
  • Proficiency with advanced GIS software capabilities, preferably using ESRI products.
  • Windows based computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access & Outlook
  • Work with GPS/GNSS receivers for data collection.
  • Valid driver’s license

REQUIRED PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to move within a normal office and workshop environment, including climbing stairs
  • Ability to bend, walk and/or stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to wield a 3/lb. hammer used for driving spikes and disks that mark graves.
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to access all areas of the Cemetery grounds and buildings
