Job Description

Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit leader in research, public education, and policy advocacy in the field of environmental health, invites students or recent graduates to apply for a GIS- geospatial analysis internship position with our organization. The internship will focus on agriculture and the environment and big data analysis.


The internship position is offered for current students or recent graduates in the Twin Cities area and will be carried out remotely. The internship runs until Mid-December, or an earlier end if necessary for the intern. Intern can work up to 29 hours per week, at $20 an hour.


Our Midwest Team employs cutting edge geospatial and data analysis to help shape policies

and programs in the public and private sector to achieve a healthy environment for people, with a particular focus on sustainable agriculture. EWG is nationally known for the comprehensive databases and interactive maps compiled and built over many years, such as EWG’s national Tap Water Database, the largest publicly accessible data repository on tap water contaminant occurrence in the United States; Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce; PFAS contamination map; Skin Deep® database of personal care products; and other databases and projects.


Duties:


  • Analyze and manipulate geospatial data, with a focus on agriculture.
  • Apply remote sensing methodologies to scan aerial and satellite imagery.
  • Conduct spatial analysis and mapping tasks using GIS software.
  • Assist in data collection, entry, and maintenance of GIS databases
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.


Qualifications
:


  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficiency in GIS software such as ArcGIS, ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, or similar tools to collect geospatial data.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work with accuracy.
  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in geography, geospatial science, cartography, or a related field, or a recent graduate.
  • Knowledge of or interest in agriculture and sustainable agriculture.
  • Ability to visually search aerial imagery.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Basic knowledge of spatial analysis, data manipulation, and data visualization.
  • Must be located in Minnesota but the person can work remotely.
  • Experience using Google Earth Pro or other software to analyze aerial or satellite imagery.

  • Geospatial analysis of aerial and satellite imagery of agricultural landscapes.
