Genetic Counselor

Individuals in this position will work in the MGH Center for Cancer Risk Assessment providing genetic counseling services to patients and families under the leadership of the Clinical Co-Directors, Program Manager and Administrative Director. Individuals in this position are required to aid in the training of genetic counseling interns, medical students, genetics fellows and other health care professionals. Patient and provider genetics education are an essential part of the job.

• Liaison with patients and laboratories regarding insurance issues surrounding genetic testing
• Aid in the professional development of genetic counseling interns, medical students and other health care providers
• Provide genetic counseling for patients in the Center for Cancer Risk Assessment through collection of family history, assessment and evaluation of histories, knowledge of genetics and appropriate testing, and psychosocial support.
• Obtain and/or review medical records documentation of cancer and other diagnoses to facilitate evaluation and assessment of family histories
• Provide consultation services for patients in other MGH Cancer Center disease centers and clinics
• Coordinate collection of saliva, blood and tissue samples for genetic analysis
• Upon reinstatement of in-person clinics, may be requested to travel to satellite or outreach clinics (Danvers, Waltham, Newton-Wellesley)
• Communicate with patients, other genetic counselors and health care professionals to review family histories and determine eligibility for genetic testing and research protocols

• Strong interpersonal skills and emotional awareness
• Research skills, especially the ability to review and synthesize relevant medical literature
• Ability to work in a collaborative environment with other members of the MGH Center for Cancer Risk Assessment team
• Licensed as a Genetic Counselor by the State of Massachusetts
• Ability to tailor, translate and communicate complex information in a simple, relevant way for a broad range of audiences (in both oral and written format)
• Ability to provide genetic counseling through collection of family history, assessment and evaluation of histories, knowledge of genetics and appropriate testing, and psychosocial support
• Board-Certified, American Board of Genetic Counseling
• Knowledge of hereditary cancer syndromes, cancer genetics and cancer risk assessment tools
• Experience in cancer genetic counseling, medical research and genetic technologies
• Aiding in the clinical training of genetic counseling interns
• Masters in Genetic Counseling
• Knowledge of pedigree standards and familiarity with specialized pedigree-drawing software
