Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Genetic Counselor for the OB/ GYN Department at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
The Genetic Counselor provides clinical Pediatric and Perinatal genetic counseling services, under physician supervision when needed, for families and/or pregnancies at risk or suspected of having a genetic condition.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Constructs and analyzes a patient’s family history including genetic disease/birth defects and all relevant medical information in addition to addressing the reason for referral.
  • Provides detailed assessment of patient’s pregnancy history including any exposures that may affect the fetus.
  • Answers the telephone with a pleasant demeanor, always identifying self, and location.
  • Assists the MFM Physician or Clinical Geneticist as an integral component of the medical genetics team in providing genetic services for pediatric and adult patients.
  • Counsels patients on the nature of the condition(s) in question, including the contribution of heredity after discussion with the MFM Physician or Clinical Geneticist.
  • Assesses and interprets the risk for occurrence/recurrence of genetic conditions in the family and discusses such information with the MFM Physician or Clinical Geneticist and/or patient.
  • Discusses with patients the options available for addressing genetic risks, including availability of carrier and prenatal diagnostic testing after case discussion with the MFM Physician or Clinical Geneticist.
  • Greets the patient in a friendly, forthright manner, making sure to always maintain eye contact and a strong smile.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master’s Degree in Human Genetics/Genetic Counseling or its equivalent required within six (6) months of hire.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Documentation of training in genetic counseling techniques and experience in genetic counseling at a site accredited by the American Board of Medical Genetics ( AMBG ) or the American Board of Genetic Counseling ( AMGC ).
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are board certified or eligible for board certification.

  • Familiarity with the medical and research community in genetics as well as appropriate community resources pertaining to genetic family studies and new technologies in diagnosis.
