Position Summary
Working with a dedicated team of physicians and researchers, the Cardiovascular Genetic Counselor will play a key role in the development and implementation of the CUMC/ NYP adult clinical cardiovascular genetic program and related research projects. This position will provide genetic counseling services in a busy academic clinical cardiovascular setting that includes patients with familial cardiovascular diseases e.g., arrhythmia, cardiomyopathy, adult congenital heart disease, aortic diseases etc. The position is based in cardiology and works in collaboration with the clinical genetics program at Columbia University.
Responsibilities
- Recruiting study patients, explaining studies to prospective participants and assisting with obtaining informed consent.
- Providing tests results to patients, obtaining/reviewing medical records, and conducting outreach to patients, families and stakeholders.
- Performing other responsibilities as needed.
- Overseeing patient care, providing genetic counseling, coordinating cascade genetic testing and follow-up visits.
- Assisting in coordinating genetic research studies and obtaining/maintaining Columbia institutional review board (IRB) approval.
- Participating in data analysis, manuscript preparation, and grant preparations with the opportunity to co-author journal publications and to present results at national meetings.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in human genetics and genetic counseling with board eligibility/certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
- Working knowledge of database software and basic statistical analysis preferred.
- At least three years of clinical experience and one year research experience preferred.
Other Requirements
- Participation in Medical Surveillance required.
- Experience in cardiovascular clinical genetics.
- Must successful complete system training requirements.
