Position Summary
The Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Genetic Counselor to join our team in a full-time position to work within the division of Molecular Genetics.
Columbia University Irving Medical Center’s Department of Pediatrics is a world leader in providing care for children. Our mission areas include Healthcare, Education and Research. We offer care for our patients in over 25 specialty areas as well as individualized care for complex cases. Our Residency, Fellowship and Graduate programs are among the best in the Nation. Our Clinical, Translational and Basic Science research features collaborations across specialties and stretches from the bench to bedside. We also have several active Clinical trials available to our patients. The candidate has a key role in the development and implementation of multiple research projects.
Transform your career as a Genetic Counselor and support patients through research in genetic basis of disease and developing new treatments. Faculty appointments possible based upon board certification and experience. Work closely with a dedicated team of leading medical geneticists and researchers and contribute to national/international studies. This position allows for training and education of graduate-level Ivy League students. You can also participate in quality improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities
Coordinates research studies, including disease specific multisite studies.
Obtains and maintains Columbia institutional review board (IRB) approval.
Recruits study patients, explains the study to prospective participants and assists with obtaining informed consent.
Coordinates patient recruitment and bio specimen collection from patients and their parents.
Assists with pre and post test genetic counseling sessions, writes result letters.
Project manager for multi-center studies and coordinators work across the study sites including organization of site research staff, IRB approvals and modifications, and central oversight of the biospecimens, genomic data, and clinical database.
Participates in data analysis, manuscript preparation, and grant preparations.
Opportunity to co-author journal publications and present results at national meetings.
Performs related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested.
Clinical Responsibilities:
Provides genetic counseling services and coordinates care for prenatal, pediatric, specialty genetic clinics.
Supervises rotating genetic counseling students and educate residents, medical students, nursing students and genetic counseling students.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience required; plus four years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling/Human Genetics from a program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
Working knowledge of database software.
Board Certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
Other Requirements
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to juggle multiple tasks.
Self-motivated, flexible, and able to work independently, effectively manage others, and think creatively.
Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with faculty and staff, researchers at other institutions, and research participants.
