As a Gameplay Engineer Intern, you will learn the best development practice and common software development workflows in the game industry. You will be responsible for implementing gameplay features in the industry-leading game engine(s), primarily Unreal Engine 5. A Gameplay Engineer Intern will be expected to learn to prototype ideas rapidly and to be capable of quickly turning a design specification from paper into a usable game system for further iteration.
A successful Gameplay Engineer Intern will learn the core skills needed to be a productive contributor of any game development team and develop an “eye” for gameplay and an interest in understanding how to deliver exciting features that puts player experience first.
Priorities often change in the fast-paced environment of game development, so this role includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:
- Contribute to the design of our gameplay systems
- Develop, modify, and debug gameplay software in script and C/C++
- Participate in the code review process
- Deploy, optimize, and test gameplay software on PC and mobile platforms
- Collaborate with other engineers on the same project
- Document software and features for internal and external teams
By the end of this internship program, the candidate will have prototyped and published a working game title that real players will playtest. In addition to learning practical skills in software development, this internship will also focus on developing career management skills and provide insights & advice on resume writing, technical interviewing, industry events, and more.
This internship will take place in a hybrid work environment, it will take place remotely primarily with some regular weekly in-office days in San Francisco.
Candidate Profile:
We love hearing from anyone who is enthusiastic about being part of and changing the games industry. Passion for gaming and an open mind ready to learn quickly is all that we require. As for academic credentials, we are looking for the following:
- Demonstrated ability to write efficient, readable, and reliable code
- Comprehensive understanding of object-oriented programming
- Proven ability to collaborate, coordinate, communicate, and support other team members
- Or entering the final year of the degree having already completed core requirements in data structures, algorithms, OOP, linear algebra, etc.
- Bachelor's degree in a Computer Science, Engineering, or Math related field new grad
Bonus Experience:
- Understanding of animation systems and techniques
- Aptitude for gameplay design and innovation
- Completed game jams or group game dev projects
- Familiarity with physics simulation
Nice to Haves:
- Familiarity & passion for Fortnite or other competitive FPS multiplayer games
- Interest in eSports
- Interest in Unreal Engine for Fortnite
