I. MAJOR FUNCTIONS:

NASW Foundation provides strategic support to all development programs, campaigns, and activities that support the Foundation’s mission. The Director plays a key role in fundraising as well as managing donor and volunteer relations, donor cultivations, grants and recognition programs. This role is responsible for developing, growing, and stewarding new and current relationships with corporations, foundations, and organizations for partnerships with NASW. The Foundation’s key constituents and organizations within the NASW community help to identify new donor bases, develop fundraising strategies, direct and coordinate solicitation procedures, and oversee all fundraising activities as it relates to the Foundation portfolio. Work activities are performed under general supervision of the CEO and in collaboration with the executive leadership team.

II. BASIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for developing and writing proposals for both restricted and unrestricted funding for NASW and NASW Foundation. Work with staff and leaders to understand proposed projects and scope of work in order to identify prospects, develop proposals, and respond to follow-up inquiries from potential funders. Assist with presentation of proposals and projects as requested by the CEO.
  • Oversee development activities related to restricted funds and endowments. Work with Marketing and Communications departments on fund-raising initiatives for each respective fund.
  • Participate as an active member of the Senior Management Team.
  • Supports the activities of the NASW Foundation Board of Directors. Meet with Board Chair to discuss organization progress toward goals, compelling prospects, and strategy. In conjunction with the CEO and Chair, schedule meetings and develop agendas and materials for full Board meetings.
  • Develop and maintain NASW and NASW Foundation annual development plan, including goals, strategy, targeted contacts, planned activities, and new prospect initiatives. Present plan to NASW and NASW Foundation Board of Directors for approval. Ensure that NASW and NASW Foundation implement activities on plan and provide formal, written quarterly updates to the CEO regarding progress toward goals and status of planned activities.
  • Contribute to and support a comprehensive Corporate and Foundation advancement plan.
  • Direct and manage a clear understanding of relationship strategy internally among key stakeholders.
  • Develop relationships with senior leaders of prospective partners to communicate NASW’s value proposition and partnerships.
  • Oversee development campaign processes. Work in collaboration with NASW Controller to ensure adequate receipt of funds and appropriate filings. Develop and manage development budgets within targets.
  • Supervises the daily work activities of assigned subordinates. Determines their work assignments, schedules and priorities. Recommends personnel actions which affect assigned subordinates. Counsels and trains employees, enforces work rules, recommends disciplinary action, when necessary, approves leave, approves timesheets and evaluates performance.
  • Contribute to and support comprehensive corporate advancement.
  • Accompany, as requested, key staff or Board members on meetings with prospects, current funders, and/or appointments related to other development opportunities.
  • Collaborate with executive leaders on funding opportunities.
  • Work with the CEO and Board to identify and cultivate prospects. Meet regularly with the CEO to discuss progress with prospect list, activities related to cultivation of new and existing prospects, and requests for prospect calls and/or visits by the CEO and/or Foundation Board member.
  • Support the Chief of Membership, Marketing and Communications with preparation of marketing activity reports, funding analysis, and presentations to executive and board leaders.
  • Oversee the timely and accurate acknowledgement of gifts to both individual and organizational donors. Ensure appropriate and regular update and maintenance of development databases.
  • Oversee design and production of all NASW print and electronic materials related to development activities. Work with Marketing and Communications staff, to ensure consistency and appropriateness of public messages. Work with all relevant NASW staff to ensure appropriate messaging in all materials that may have a development component.
  • Cultivate a channel of Global corporate and foundation donors, and grow the partnerships for our global programming, event sponsorship and core mission support funding opportunities.
  • Stay on top of severe, high-impact natural emergency responses and develop appropriate responses through the Foundation.
  • Develop briefings, presentations, and customized collateral for prospective partners.

III. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • External: Interacts with the NASW Foundation Board of Directors, volunteer leadership, donors, prospects, vendors, and chapters in planning and implementing fundraising and related public relations activities.
  • Internal: Interacts with all levels of NASW staff on matters relating to development.

IV. MINIMUM WORK REQUIREMENTS:

  • Skills: Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, supervisory skills, and must be able to manage a multi-project deadline-oriented environment Must be proficient in word-processing, spreadsheets, internet research, fundraising and database software.
  • Experience: Requires 4-8 years proven fundraising experience in major gifts, corporation/foundation solicitation and planned giving in addition to the education requirement. Demonstrated experience in social justice issues and concerns. Managerial and problem-solving experience.
  • Knowledge: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience. MSW or MBA degrees preferred. Knowledge of latest innovations in fundraising techniques.
