Job Description
General Responsibility
Evidence Control Technicians are responsible for scheduling evidence submission appointments, managing incoming calls, and monitoring the secured customer entry gate. Assist law enforcement officers throughout the state with the submission of physical evidence involved in criminal investigations, both in person and via a web-based evidence pre-log system. Assist in the appropriate selection of exam requests and determine the proper packaging and routing of the evidence for analysis. Assist with Evidence Custodian duties operating the Evidence Room to include the proper procedure of evidence dispositions.

Specific Duties
  • Under limited supervision, demonstrate the ability to work independently and as a team member. Practice prompt work attendance (to include notification of tardiness), display professionalism and share daily duties within department. Take appropriate breaks and lunch hours. Maintain neat and orderly workspace. Participate in all required safety and/or education and training.
  • Schedule evidence submission appointments, route incoming calls, and monitor the secured customer entry gate. Greet and assist incoming officers, display professional communication skills by phone. Assist in paperwork preparation, search computer for case information such as status, analysts assigned or additional submissions. Review all forms to determine if vital information is correct. Make notations for analysts of pertinent information. Record important case information accurately in appropriate fields in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Scan all forms; enter data in LIMS.
  • Take authorized possession of evidence coming into laboratory. Stock evidence appropriately. Disburse new evidence to analysts and return back to originating agency upon completion of analysis. Coordinate proper disposition of evidence as needed and authorized. Utilize LIMS to perform associated tasks and to generate statistical reports. Provide testimony in court when requested.
  • Inventory and critique evidence to determine which laboratory department is to perform the analysis and in which order it should be routed. Package evidence according to size and type. Determine proper handling procedure on case by case basis. Mark or label items appropriately. Maintain integrity of evidence. Determine appropriate take in and storage for all evidence.

  • Must have the ability to lift items of evidence up to 40 pounds.
  • Must have a high school diploma or an associate's degree; and working knowledge of computerized information management systems, laboratory experience and/or inventory management experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite job knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Some overnight travel may be required for court and/or training
  • Employee must have the skills to accurately input data into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and the ability to effectively communicate with law enforcement officials from various types of agencies. Must have the ability to testify as a witness in a court of law.
  • Position requires periodic 24-hour call duty.
