Overview
The Vermont Department of Health (VDH) is currently seeking a Forensic Autopsy Technician. The primary responsibilities of the Forensic Autopsy Technician are to assist the forensic pathologist before, during and after autopsy and maintain the OCME morgue. This position will also perform clerical duties and as necessary, perform back up support and duties assigned by the Assistant Medical Examiner Coordinator (AMEC).
Responsibilities of the Forensic Autopsy Technician will include:
Managing movement and storage of bodies before, during, and after postmortem examination.
Assisting the forensic pathologist by set up before and clean up after the autopsy, and during autopsy by rendering assistance with documentation, dissection/evisceration and specimen collection as directed by the forensic pathologist
Assisting in the collection and preservation of clothing, physical and biological evidence for forensic analysis, including forensic toxicology, clinical chemistry, serology and microbiologic testing as directed by the forensic pathologist and in accordance with established procedures.
Assisting other forensic consultants in forensic examinations, such as dental or anthropology examinations
Maintaining inventory supplies in the Medical Examiner's office including supplies for the morgue, disaster trailer and Medicolegal Death Investigators
Filing tissue blocks and slides and responding to requests from attorneys, families and others for recuts, DNA samples and other testing requests
Perform clerical tasks as assigned which may include triaging phone calls, filing, special assignments and projects
Ideal candidates will have working knowledge of modern forensic and pathological laboratory principles and procedures and medical nomenclature and anatomy. Ideal candidates will also have clerical aptitude, the ability to learn laboratory procedures, and multi-task in a fast moving environment, and have good organizational skills to manage supplies and facility.

Environmental Factors
Duties are performed in an office and laboratory setting, specifically at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner's administrative and morgue facility. Work requires physical ability to assist with autopsies. Some travel may be required; a valid Vermont driver's license or access to some private means of transportation is desirable. Duties may involve unusual and irregular work hours, including evenings and weekends.
Minimum Qualifications
Associates degree with coursework in anatomy
OR
6 months or more of experience as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic
OR
6 months or more of experience observing or assisting with autopsy examinations and/or work experience as an autopsy technician in a hospital morgue or Medical Examiner's office.
