Job Description
Job Summary


Position serves as the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Coordinator for the City of Dearborn Heights Police Department. Position is responsible for ensuring compliance with and reviewing, interpreting, and applying federal and state FOIA laws, regulations, and policies to all FOIA requests submitted to or involving the Police department.


The City of Dearborn Heights is a public corporation. The employees of the City are required to serve citizens and customers in a tactful, courteous manner; establish and maintain good working relationships with staff, directors, elected officials, and general public. Employees in this position must demonstrate honesty and integrity.


SALARY & BENEFITS $60,000 to $70,000 benefit eligible after 90 days


This is a FULL TIME salary exempt position and not eligible for overtime. The City offers a generous benefit package; paid vacation, sick and holiday; short-term disability & life insurance; defined contribution pension plan.


Qualifications


  • Must be able to pass a written test and oral board exam with 70% or better; must be able to pass a pre-employment physical, including drug screen, and background check.
  • Experience administering FOIA requests & responses preferred
  • Excellent communication skills; Problem solving; Analytical skills; Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion & maintain confidentiality.
  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, communications or related field required;


Duties & Responsibilities


Working independently, respond to all FOIA requests related to or involving the Police department; assign to appropriate City units; determine appropriate response in compliance with applicable laws; ensure timeliness; craft responses for denials & process appeals; monitors, reviews, interprets federal & state policies, laws, regulations related to FOIA; coordinates training of staff on requirements; attends City meetings involving FOIA requests.
