Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and the Naval Reactors Facility which have proudly supported the nation since 1946. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory has nearly 8,000 employees working at primary locations in Pennsylvania, New York, South Carolina, and Idaho. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory also has an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations around the globe. We are dedicated solely to the support of the United States Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC, a wholly own a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is looking for a Radiochemist/Nuclear Engineer to join the Reactor Plant Chemistry group supporting reactor plant chemistry with an emphasis on radiochemistry and radiochemistry equipment for U.S. Navy aircraft carriers, submarines, prototypes and moored training ships.

The successful candidate will

  • Coordinate and manage all aspects of small and large projects which require interfacing with various NNL organizations and external organizations.
  • Work with a multi-disciplined team of engineers and scientists to test and implement radiochemistry analysis methods and equipment.
  • Support deployed radiochemistry analysis systems by designing tests, qualifying next-generation hardware, writing and maintaining procedures, training operators, responding to emergent fleet requests for technical assistance, and evaluating system data.
  • Resolve reactor plant chemistry issues and radiochemical analysis method and equipment issues.

The successful candidate should be able to work efficiently on multiple tasks and complete tasks in a timely manner.

Limited travel is required for installation of radiochemistry equipment, vendor meetings, and radiochemistry technology conferences.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience or; MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience or; Currently or previously NPE qualified or CTE/ACRS and one year of EOOW in the Nuclear Operations Program or Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and one year as SRE

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with gamma-ray spectroscopy data processing software and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of gamma spectroscopy equipment and analysis methods.
  • Excellent communication skills written and oral.
  • Radiochemistry, analytical chemistry, or inorganic chemistry coursework and laboratory experience.
  • Knowledge of nuclear power plant systems.
