This is full performance level equipment repair, overhaul, replacement and maintenance work on engines and related component and sub-component parts and assemblies used in automotive, construction and specialized equipment powered by electrical motors and internal combustion gas, diesel or alternative fueled engines. Work includes performing safety and emission inspections and preventive and corrective maintenance, and operating equipment to ensure proper functioning. Using accepted troubleshooting and diagnostic techniques in order to isolate malfunctioning parts and assemblies and guiding lower-level maintenance personnel to perform proper equipment operation, diagnosis, repair, maintenance and inspectional methods, techniques and procedures are of major significance to the work.
Additionally, under the supervision of the Fleet Superintendent and Senior Fleet Mechanic, this position is responsible for the daily maintenance and repair of City vehicles and small//heavy equipment. Reports to the Fleet Superintendent or designee.
- Checks condition of all City emergency generators routinely and as assigned. Repairs and services as needed.
- Operates a variety of equipment such as vehicles, tractors, bulldozers, backhoes, dump trucks, loaders, trucks, small engines and equipment, power tools, hand tools, diagnostic instruments, two-way radios, etc.
- Operates vehicles to verify symptoms and isolate problems and, after repair or maintenance, to assure proper functioning.
- Maintains a preventive maintenance and repair of city fire and rescue trucks and fire apparatus. Performs maintenance and repair of a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Operates computerized diagnostic equipment and shop tools such as grinders, vacuum gauge, voltage and regulator tester, wheel balancer, wheel pullers, air tools, scope, timing light and various hand tools and other equipment used in automotive repairs.
- Cleans and changes filters on automotive equipment, checks compressors, radiators, radiator hoses; performs general service on all types of heavy equipment; assists in all areas of automotive repair.
- Analyzes and diagnoses malfunctions in electronic and computerized fuel and ignition systems. Repairs or replaces damaged automotive frames and performs minor bodywork.
- Greases and lubricates automobiles, trucks and other automotive equipment; services batteries and other parts; performs equipment installation, including the assembly, installation, or removal of special automotive equipment.
- Uses the City’s computerized fleet management system to record labor, material and equipment utilized in making repairs.
- Details interior and exterior of vehicles after preventive maintenance. Cleans and helps maintain an orderly Fleet Services shop.
- Reviews work in progress and completed to ensure conformance to instructions, standards and specifications; identifies problems in work performed and instructs subordinates on more appropriate measures of repair; ensures the safety of the work environment and enforces safety rules and regulations; trains and/or ensures the training of newly hired and inexperienced employees; performs machining work as required.
- Performs emergency road service; performs service and repairs on stormwater pump station pumps and engines and related control mechanisms.
- Repairs all types of electrical and internal combustion gas, diesel and alternative fueled vehicles and equipment including trucks, fire apparatus, automobiles, tractors, heavy construction equipment, stormwater pumps and engines, gasoline powered hand tools and emergency equipment and their integrated mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and computerized component and sub-component systems. Isolates cause of malfunction by using diagnostic and other troubleshooting equipment.
- Repairs, replaces and adjusts parts such as brakes, steering systems, pumps, hydraulic rams and all other automotive vehicle systems. Tunes engines and aligns wheels.
- Performs highly skilled work in the repair and adjustment of equipment when difficult or unusual problems are encountered.
- Makes decisions on repairs by scheduling "down time" for equipment and coordinating with operators for repair time.
- Responds to emergency calls after hours, on weekends and during hurricane season. Remains on call after hours and weekends for Fire Department fire and rescue trucks. Performs emergency road service.
- Interacts and communicates with Public Services supervisors and employees, City department heads and employees.
- Rebuilds engines, transmissions, rear-end assemblies, differentials, carburetors, and related components. Tests rebuilt units for proper operation.
- Maintains adequate supply of fuel for generators.
- Adjusts and repairs front and rear wheel and/or multi-wheel drive vehicles and installs, adjusts or repairs air- conditioning systems
- Performs specialized machinist work including welding, body repair and painting. Designs, modifies, and installs hydraulic systems and other special accessories to the equipment on hand.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Fills in Senior Mechanic’s position during his absence. Cleans, washes and vacuums vehicles.
- Performs related duties as required.
Requires high school diploma or GED and at least five years of experience as a journeyman, and one year of additional supervisory experience, in automotive/heavy equipment maintenance and repair, or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must obtain a valid state CDL Class B driver's license within six months of employment. Certification in a minimum of three areas in the automotive or medium/heavy truck series by the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence is preferred. Must have complete set of basic mechanics tools.
