Are you interested in learning more about the work that is done in a hatchery? If so, this could be the opportunity you have been looking for. This temporary position will give you a chance to make a valuable contribution to the hatchery team while gaining experience working with fish.
This temporary position is anticipated to last from July 03, 2023 – September 29, 2023.
(These are estimated dates. Length of assignment may be shortened or extended depending on project needs, funding, or factors beyond the project’s control).

What you will do:
FISH REARING
  • Treats fish as prescribed by fish pathologist.
  • Sets up rearing containers to receive fish or fry.
  • Drives hatchery liberation truck for the release or transfer of fish.
  • Sets and monitors water flows.
  • Feeds fish as directed with proper size, type, and quantities of fish food, is observant of feed quality, such as odor, color and texture.
  • Moves and handles fish in rearing containers as needed to inventory, grade, mark, load, transfer or release.
  • Monitors fish growth, development, feedings, and water flows and keeps accurate records.
INCUBATION AND EGG HANDLING
  • Sets up and sanitizes incubation area and equipment to receive eggs.
  • Sets and maintains water flows for hatchery and emerging fry, monitors for health, removes eggs shells and mortalities, monitors fry development to determine when to feed/pond.
  • Prepares eggs for shipment or transfer.
  • Receives eggs from spawning area, other hatcheries or programs, treats and puts down in an approved manner.
  • Readies eyed eggs for hatchery; determines when to pick, clean up, treat, inventory, and tray down eggs in appropriate containers.
  • Sets and maintains water flows to eye up eggs; monitors eggs for health
Working Conditions:
  • Works outdoors under adverse conditions.
  • Able to lift 50# sacks of feed, drug cartons, and maneuver chemical drums.
  • This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.
  • Housing is available for this position
  • This position requires a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Dealings with public, local residents and other agency personnel are frequent and a well-developed sense of diplomacy is required.
  • Operates assigned fish culture and hatchery maintenance equipment on a routine basis.
Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background and/or driving information may disqualify you from further consideration.

NOTE: Within three days of hire, applicants will be required to complete the U.S. Department Homeland Security's I-9 form confirming authorization to work in the United States. ODFW participates in E-Verify. ODFW is not able to support VISA sponsorships.
Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications are not established for this classification (there are no minimum qualifications). Previous related experience is desirable.
Desired Knowledge/Skills:
  • Experience working with the public
  • Proficient using a computer
  • Good communication skills
  • Performing preventative or routine maintenance on vehicles and power equipment
  • Basic building maintenance skills
  • Fish culture knowledge
