The Team You’ll Work With


The Mayor’s Press Office leads the effort to inform, update, and engage New Yorkers about Mayor Adams’ commitments to fighting income inequality, ensuring every child gets a quality education, ensure every community is safe, and every New Yorker has an affordable place to call home.


The Problems You’ll Solve


Reporting to the Press Secretary, The First Deputy Press Secretary will develop and execute effective communication strategies across City agencies. The First Deputy Press Secretary helps to manage a fast-paced and dynamic communication plan that helps to accomplish day-to-day relationships with local and national media. He/she will work closely with the Press Secretary to execute a plan that is purposeful, efficient, and effective. Under the leadership of the Press Secretary, the First Deputy ensures that the press office remains top-of-mind for every decision made by the administration and helps to ensure that news stories are released when they need to be and in a way that meets the needs of both the government and the public.


  • Keeps abreast of media-relevant issues and informs staff of scheduled appearances by the Mayor.
  • Assists Press Secretary in coordinating all details of press conferences with Mayor Adams and other senior administration officials, booking media appearances, and major media events.
  • Screens, responds to, or refers press inquiries to appropriate staff.
  • Maintains relationships with media outlets and monitors media coverage.
  • Updates Mayor’s media contact lists; maintains archive of press releases and related media publications.
  • Develops and drafts press releases, columns, op-eds, speeches, newsletters, and talking points.
  • Reviews daily news articles and creates press clips to circulate and file relevant items.
  • Trains and supervises press team.


About You


  • You are a strong writer, who can tell a story clearly and concisely is a must, as is a clear understanding of all AP-style rules.
  • You can think creatively, embrace new approaches and pioneer innovative solutions to intricate problems, while working collaboratively with a diverse constituency
  • You have strong written communication and verbal skills.
  • You can operate in a fast-paced environment, often under short and shifting deadlines and in high-pressure situations.
  • You have experience leading and managing multiple complex projects in a fast-paced setting.
  • You have on-the-record experience and can shape stories off-the-record and on background.
  • You can juggle multiple priority assignments effectively.
  • You can work non-traditional hours and be on call.


Salary


The City of New York Office of the Mayor’s compensation package includes a market competitive salary, equity for all full-time roles and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation range for this role is $130,000 - $140,000.
