Job Description
Position

The City of Lakeville is recruiting Firefighters (paid on call) to be responsible for providing skilled fire suppression work and safe and effective operation of fire apparatus for Fire Station 2 and Fire Station 3.
Firefighter's Schedule:
Duty Crew: Firefighters (paid on call) are required to work a minimum of eight (8) duty crew shifts (4-4.5 hours each) per quarter as required by department policy.

Training: Firefighters (paid on call) will attend one (1) training per month as required by department policy.

On Call: Firefighters (paid on call) will carry a pager and respond to emergency calls as required by department policy.
2023 Salary Information - $15.00 per hour.

Thursday, June 8, 2023 - 7:00 p.m. at Fire Station 1

Written Test – 30 minutes (required)
Saturday, June 17, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Written test will take place at Fire Station 1 located at 20190 Holyoke Avenue.
Physical Agility Test
Saturday, June 24, 2023 - 9:00 a.m. to Noon @ Fire Station 1, 20190 Holyoke Avenue.
Practice Walk-Through and Physical Agility Test (wear comfortable clothing).
If you pass, next process will be an interview.
Online applications will be reviewed after the Physical Agility Test.

Major Areas of Accountability

  • Responds to emergency calls, renders aid to victim(s) as required in accordance with department policy.
  • Performs all assigned firefighter duties in accordance with common practices and department guidelines.
  • Assists in fire prevention duties and fire prevention education, etc.
  • Maintains facilities and performs housekeeping duties as directed.
  • Conducts station tours for the public, schools, and community demonstrations and programs.
  • Keeps a Fire officer advised of fire suppression developments and performs other duties as apparent or assigned.
  • Completes proper checklists and reports damaged and improperly functioning equipment.
  • Conducts themselves in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Responds to emergency calls with proper equipment quickly and safely.
  • Maintains and improves rescue and firefighting skills. Attends training sessions, studies material on fire hazards and firefighting or rescue methods and maintains familiarity with city streets and all department equipment. May be requested to conduct training based on topic expertise.
  • Cleans up and ensures equipment readiness.
  • Assists in inspecting, maintaining, and repairing, as necessary, all fire related equipment.
SCHEDULE:

    Qualifications

    • High school graduate or equivalent.
    • Must successfully complete an initial written exam, initial and annual ability test, medical examination, and background check.
    • Must possess valid Minnesota driver's license.
    • Must reside within a two (2) mile radius of a Lakeville fire station upon application.
    • 18 years of age on appointment date.
    OSHA law (CFR 1910.156, Section b, part 2) mandates that firefighters expected to perform interior structural firefighting duties are physically capable of performing said duties.
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    • Must be able to walk or crawl while carrying or lifting.
    • Must be able to drag an object weighing 115 lbs. or more.
    • Must be able to multiply, divide, use fractions and read graphs (fire pump operations).
    • Walking and/or other mobility:
      • Must be able to walk or crawl while carrying or lifting.
      • Must be able to ascend and descend stairs or ladders.
        • Must be able to balance and have the ability to steady oneself and keep from falling.
        • Must be capable of reaching (extend the hands or arms in any direction); capable of utilizing both gross and fine muscle functions for the handling (seizing, holding, grasping, turning or otherwise working with the hands); fingering (picking, pinching, or otherwise working with the fingers); and feeling (perceiving attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by means of receptors in skin, particularly those of the fingertips).
    • Must be able to interpret instructions and use logic to solve problems.
    • Must be able to communicate effectively to others.
    • Must be able to balance and have the ability to steady oneself and keep from falling.
    • Must be able to ascend and descend stairs or ladders.

    • Normal vision needed with or without correction. Requires both near and far acuity.
    • Must be capable of reaching (extend the hands or arms in any direction); capable of utilizing both gross and fine muscle functions for the handling (seizing, holding, grasping, turning or otherwise working with the hands); fingering (picking, pinching, or otherwise working with the fingers); and feeling (perceiving attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by means of receptors in skin, particularly those of the fingertips).
    • Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 60 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 115 pounds.
    • Must be able to read textbooks.
    PERFORMANCE CRITERIA:
    • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective and continuing working relationships with other department members and the general public.
    • Successful completion of two (2) year probation period.
    • Must complete the following required training courses within established probationary period.
    • Must meet call percentage and training requirements per department policy.
    • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or higher
    • Active participation in fire department activities.
    • Successfully passes periodic cardiovascular fitness evaluation, respiratory function test, and physical ability evaluation as prescribed by Fire Department standards.
    • Remains physically fit and capable to perform strenuous work under adverse conditions.
    • Water Rescue Orientation
    • NFPA 472 Hazmat Operations Certification
    • Demonstrated ability and knowledge to perform precarious fire suppression techniques and operate fire service equipment. Maintains firefighter skills.
    • Training course to be completed after probationary period
    • Fire Apparatus Operator – Basic
    • Complete National Incident Management System (N.I.M.S.) courses ICS 100 and 700.
