WHO WE ARE

The mission of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is to conserve the lands and waters upon which all life depends. As a science-based organization, we develop innovative, on-the-ground solutions to the world’s toughest environmental challenges so that people and nature can thrive. Our work is guided by our values, which include a commitment to diversity and respect for people, communities, and cultures. From a rewarding mission to career development and flexible schedules, there are many reasons to love life #insideTNC. Want to know more? Check out our TNC Talent playlist on YouTube to hear stories from staff or visit Glassdoor.

One of TNC’s primary goals is to cultivate an inclusive work environment so that employees around the globe have a sense of belonging and feel that their unique contributions are valued. We know we’ll only achieve our mission by hiring and engaging a diverse staff that reflects the communities in which we work. Recognizing that people bring talent and skills that have been developed outside the scope of a job, we take a holistic approach to recruitment that considers life experience in addition to the professional requirements listed in our postings. Please apply – we’d love to hear from you. To quote a popular saying at TNC, “you’ll join for the mission, and you’ll stay for the people.”

WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Fire and Stewardship Crew Member (FSCM) will work in a team setting within a three-person crew and a Fire and Stewardship Coordinator leading them. This team will engage in prescribed fire operations such as ignition, suppression, mop-up, fuels monitoring, and other RX fire tasks as assigned. The FSCM will use and maintain equipment to prepare fire lines via chainsaws, leaf blowers, and other machinery. When not engaged in RX Fire the FSCM will partake in timber stand improvement projects, understory thinning, and other preserve maintenance tasks as needed. As part of the FSCM’s ongoing professional development, they will be expected to keep informed of new techniques and enhance their skills to grow professionally and within fire certification credentials. In addition, they shall work to maintain positive relationships in the professional and local communities they work in. This position will include participation in prescribed fire operations with other partnering non-profits, local Prescribe Burn Associations, state, or federal agencies such as the Missouri Conservation Department, U.S. Forest Service, U.S Park Service, and the Missouri DNR. The FSCMs may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.

WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU

FSCMs should have some experience or capability to learn proper use and basic maintenance of hand tools, power equipment, vehicles, and trailers. Field stewardship can be dangerous and stressful but, safety and our crew’s wellbeing is our number one priority. FSCMs should have conflict resolution and problem-solving skills. FSCMs should be prepared for crew housing, where crew members will live in close proximity to one another both during and after work hours. Housing will be provided but, there may be an occasional need to camp for short durations. Anticipated start date for FSCMs will be October 10th, 2023, ending April 12th, 2024. The FSCM will be part of one of two crews located in either Van Buren or Lebanon Missouri. During the fire season the FSCM will be expected to work irregular hours outdoors (weather dependent) in a strenuous setting with possibilities for travel and weekend availabilities. The FSCM will be compensated at 16.00/hr.
