Job Description

Reporting to the Director, Operations with a dotted-line reporting relationship to the Sr. Gift Planning Advisor, the Financial Consultant – Development is responsible for a managing a variety of Finance and Restricted Fund related processes for the Development Office.

A key responsibility of this position will be to oversee the $130M+ in expendable philanthropic restricted funds for the Development Office, ensuring each fund has clearly defined/accurate spending restrictions, is assigned to an appropriate department/individual to be utilized, and is being regularly spent on its intended purpose. Efficient use of philanthropic funds is key to stewarding Henry Ford donors and raising future gifts.

This position will also have responsibilities in the Development Office related to budget management / forecasting, management of donated life insurance policies, and management of other planned giving vehicles.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Management of processes related to setting up new restricted funds and grants

  • Work with front-line fundraiser colleagues to collect gift/grant agreements defining the donor-imposed restrictions on new philanthropic funds being created.
  • Work with fundraiser colleagues and the recommended fund fiduciary to fill out the fund startup form, which is intended to clearly define the fund’s purpose, spending restrictions, budget, how the fund should be categorized, etc.
  • Submit documentation to system Finance team and clarify any questions they may have related to the new fund.
  • Enter fund restrictions into shared database and store fund startup documentation for future reference.

Oversight of existing philanthropic funds and grants

  • Monitor fund balances and work with Henry Ford Health leadership to intervene in situations where funds are not being utilized on a regular basis.
  • Produce reports for senior leadership of funds with largest balances and work with them to ensure that a spending plan exists to utilize the funds on their intended purpose.
  • Research spending restrictions of any philanthropic fund where the restrictions are not known or are ambiguous. This may include reviewing files from the Development Office’s historical paper filing system, electronic archive information, etc. Once research has been completed, this position will be responsible to articulating what the spending restrictions for a given fund are and providing backup documentation as needed.

Budget Management & Expense Forecasting

  • Work with Development’s Director, Operations and system Finance team to project the Development Office’s budget and make budget requests for future years.
  • Review mid-year expenditure reports in order to forecast how much the Development Office will spend in the current year based on YTD spending rate, planned investments and seasonal factors.

Manage Life Insurance Program

  • Work with gift administration team to schedule pledge reminders for annual premium payment contributions
  • Submit premium payment requests to Accounts Payable
  • Monitor life insurance premium account on a monthly basis to ensure gifts/premium payments reconcile with accounts payable and gift administration
  • Maintain the log of life insurance policies, documentation
  • Annual status review of each policy to ensure donor/HFH intent and value is maintained

Charitable Gift Annuity/Charitable Trust Program

  • Maintain donor contact information and share changes with third-party vendor that manages Henry Ford Health’s charitable gift annuity (CGA) and charitable remainder trust (CRT) programs.
  • Oversee the process to liquidate CGAs and CRTs

o Work with third party vendor and appropriate internal HFH teams to facilitate proceeds and ensure funds are deposited into correct fund accounts


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

· Minimum of bachelor's degree from four-year College in Finance, Accounting, or related field is REQUIRED. Master’s degree is PREFERRRED.

  • Minimum of five to seven years of experience in Finance, Accounting, or related field is REQUIRED.
  • Experience working with philanthropic fund management is PREFERRED.
  • Experience working with or knowledge related to Planned Giving vehicles such as Charitable Remainder Trusts, Charitable Gift Annuities, Life Insurance Policies is PREFERRED.
