Company Description

Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!

Are you interested in joining some of the brightest talent in the world to strengthen the United States’ security? Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where our employees apply their expertise to create solutions for BIG ideas that make our world a better place.

We are committed to a diverse and equitable workforce with an inclusive culture that values and celebrates the diversity of our people, talents, ideas, experiences, and perspectives. This is important for continued success of the Laboratory’s mission.

Pay Range

$12,500 / $18,154 Monthly

Please note the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

We have an opening for a temporary faculty scholar to perform research in the areas of Bayesian inference and optimal experimental design for characterization of quantum systems to come. You will come to the Lab for a 1–3-month sabbatical visit, where you will be part of an interdisciplinary team that develops and implements numerical algorithms for Bayesian approaches for estimating the distribution of parameters in Schrodinger’s or Lindblad’s differential equations. These algorithms will be used to characterize and control quantum devices in the next generation of quantum computing hardware. This position is in the Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) Division within the Computing Directorate.

In this role you will

  • Document your research and development in journal publications or conference presentations and collaborate with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to accomplish research goals.
  • Provide expertise in Bayesian characterization and experimental design, numerical approaches based on Monte-Carlo methods, with application to estimating parameter distributions in computational models of quantum computing devices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Provide supporting mathematical analysis of the numerical algorithms and implement them in a high-level programming language.
  • Accomplish research goals in collaboration with technical area leaders, project leaders, and program management in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Participate in activities as appropriate to provide and gain exposure to the laboratory.

Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge in Bayesian methods for time-dependent wave propagation demonstrated by a publication record.
  • Ph.D. in Numerical Analysis, Scientific Computing, or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Demonstrated initiative and interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Must be a continuing faculty member at an accredited United States research institution.
  • Expertise in numerical analysis, numerical linear algebra, and numerical solution of differential equations.
  • Experience developing software in a high-level language, e.g., Julia or Python.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.

Additional Information

All your information will be kept confidential according to EEO guidelines.
