Job Description

Organization:

PAMF-Palo Alto Medical Foundation PAD

Position Overview:

Responsible for assessing the safety of all patients while participating in therapeutic exercise. Monitors appropriate use of equipment. Works with healthcare professionals to design exercise programs to meet special health needs of each patient. Designs personal exercise programs for patients. Works independently with cardiac rehab class participants by monitoring the patients vitals ensuring their responses to exercise are appropriate and be prepared take medical intervention if needed. Communicates effectively with the healthcare professionals through the electronic medical record.

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

PATIENT CARE:
  • Has basic understanding of common medications and their affects on exercise.
  • Recognizes contraindications to exercise and abnormal patient responses to exercise and adjusts program as appropriate working under the guidance of a RN or leader.
  • Conducts cardiac diagnostic testing, including EKG and Cardiac Stress Testing.
  • Has good understanding of the pathophysiology of major disease processes.
  • Provides patient testing both pre and post rehabilitation including strength, body composition, flexibility, balance and endurance.
  • Provides exercise prescription for patients utilizing test data, patient status, and current medication regimen; updates prescription according to patient response.
  • Able to understand basic lab reports/results and discuss with patient.
  • Responds appropriately to all situations including exercise cessation and referral to medical professional.

EXERCISE PROGRAM DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION
  • Able to explain the cardiac rehab and fitness center program to patients and gather appropriate information.
  • Adapts conventional exercise techniques to meet the needs of patients unable to comprehend verbal commands or voluntarily carry out a regime of therapeutic exercises.
  • Designs patient specific exercise programs tailored to match the medical status of the patient and their goals.

DEVELOPMENT
  • Researches, reviews, and applies current concepts in the scientific literature.
  • Assists in program administration such as providing input into department goals, objectives and budget.
  • Collects data for process improvement activities and approved research activities.

ADMINISTRATIVE:
  • Tracks patient progress and prepares reports for medical review and maintains authorization for treatment.
  • Enters charges into the system, processes payments and checks for accuracy.
  • Assists with patients schedules to ensure patients are attending on a consistent basis.
  • Completes documentation as required by the profession, payers and the department.
  • Assists with contacting patients who cancel/no-show their appointments to check on their status.

EDUCATION:
Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma.

Bachelor's: exercise physiology or related field

CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE:

BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider

Limited Phlebotomy Technician (LPT) Certificate within 18 months

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:


2 years recent relevant experience

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, chemistry, and physics.

In-depth knowledge of exercise testing, exercise equipment and quality control.

Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

Ability to perform multiple tasks and prioritize independently with follow through in a timely manner.

Ability to design, implement, and supervise individualized exercise prescriptions for people with chronic disease and disabling conditions.

Ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations.
