About Us


PHP is a nonprofit founded in 1998 on the premise that a dog's unconditional love, when paired with compassionate humans, is a remarkable source of community support. PHP's mission is to improve the lives of the most vulnerable and others through Animal-Assisted Interventions (AAI) aka pet therapy. PHP services include, training and accreditation, collaborations, education and awareness. Our program also supports independent visits from our certified teams and group therapy activities, which include Waggin' Tails, a pet therapy performance troupe, and Comfort Paws, interactive events between pet therapy teams and the public.

To be a knowledgeable, compassionate and responsive source of information and support to all who seek education, training or involvement in AAI (pet therapy) in order to enrich the lives of people in our community in southeastern Wisconsin, including individuals with special needs.

Interaction with certified therapy dogs enriches the lives of people of all ages, including those with special needs.


Effectiveness in the practice of AAI can only be achieved through professional evaluation and training, together with ongoing support.


Nurturing is a strong and basic human need, which therapy dogs can provide for people of all ages, including those with special needs.


The welfare of animals used in pet therapy must be protected at all times.


About The Opportunity


The Executive Director (ED) will have a strong passion for the mission and be responsible for the overall management and operations of PHP including the short- and long-term implementation of goals and strategies as defined by the organizational and strategic plans created by the Board of Directors and ED. The ED secures and protects financial assets while ensuring compliance with all applicable requirements. Other key duties include program management, fundraising, marketing and community outreach. This position reports to and is supervised by the Board of Directors and more specifically the Executive Committee of the Board. The position operates in the broader context of PHP's mission.


Leadership and Management


Oversees the appropriate organizational structure to ensure that the organizational and programmatic objectives are supported internally including training programs, facilities, technology, finances, and communications.


Actively engages with and energizes volunteers, event committees, partnering organizations, and funders.


Supports a strong Board of Directors; serves as an ex-officio member of each standing committee; seeks and builds Board involvement with strategic direction for ongoing operations; assists the Board in finding and participating in pertinent professional development opportunities.


Maintains official records and documents and ensures compliance with federal, state and local regulations.


Financial Management and Fund Development


Assumes responsibility for the fiscal integrity of PHP to include submission to the Board the proposed yearly budget and bi-monthly financial statements which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization in conjunction with the Treasurer.


Prudently manages the organization’s resources within budget (revenue and expenses) guidelines and according to current laws and regulations.


Assumes responsibility for overall fundraising efforts including grants, donations, sponsorships, etc.


Increases, strengthens and diversifies the organization’s funding resources.


Establishes and maintains regular contact with funding sources, donors, and strategic partners.


Organizational Development and Management


Ensures the excellence of Board-approved programs; oversees program quality, finance, administration, and evaluation; recommends timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals.


Assures the development and implementation of programs and services to benefit and support its target populations working with volunteers and collaborative partners.


Regularly evaluates program components to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the Board, funders and other constituents.


Oversees the management and tracking of volunteers (Handler/Pet teams and others), facilitates working agreements with strategic and facility partners, and does all necessary reporting and evaluations.


Stays abreast of and reports to the Board any current and projected issues that might affect the operations/programs of current/proposed programs.


Secures and supports volunteers and paid staff including appropriate performance issues when applicable.


Has responsibility for meeting all contractual obligations and maintaining effective working relationships with funders and partners.


Marketing and Communications


Builds and retains partnerships with Facility Partners, dog-centric organizations/businesses, corporate entities and funders in order to strategically enhance PHP’s mission.


Deepens and refines all aspects of communication—from web presence to internal and external messaging within the PHP community and the community at large.


Represents the organization in the community and with its various public audiences.


Position Details


The position is a salaried part-time position at 30 hours per week.


Work location is remote.


Attendance/representation is required at most events, which include the group activities, special events, public engagements, and media appearances.


Qualifications


Authentic passion for the mission and high comfort level with dogs.


At least three years of executive leadership and nonprofit board experience with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree.


Must have demonstrated ability to manage volunteer activities, be an excellent communicator as well as written and verbal skills.


Proven fundraising, networking, marketing and financial management skills.


Computer literacy (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and ability to work with online tools (QuickBooks, CRM-DonorSnap, Website-WordPress, Google Drive)


Experience And Understanding Of Nonprofit Organizations Are Required.


Must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation sitting/standing for prolonged periods of time, able to lift/carry/transport 40 lbs, able to work in an outdoor environment.
