Job Description
The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 9,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.
The Correction Intelligence Bureau (“CIB”) is responsible for collecting intelligence on and monitoring the activities of various security risk groups within correctional facilities, collecting, and preserving evidence on criminal matters for the purpose of criminal prosecution, and deterring and uncovering the introduction of contraband within Department facilities. CIB also ensures the safe and swift apprehension of erroneously discharged or escaped individuals and the rearrest of any incarcerated person who commits a crime within DOC facilities. The DOC seeks to recruit Evidence Technicians who under executive direction and with latitude to exercise independent judgement, will be responsible for processing crime scenes and ensuring proper evidence collection, which is critical to the successful investigation and prosecution of criminal cases. The Evidence Technicians will:
  • Respond to, secure, document, and process crime scenes, including but not limited to incidents
involving deaths, assaults on staff, inmate on inmate assaults, destruction of property, fires,
contraband recoveries, and escapes.
  • Coordinate with Investigators from the Correction Intelligence Bureau, assisting with the collection,
analysis, and preservation of physical evidence related to ongoing criminal investigations.
  • Oversee the Evidence Control Section, where all evidence, found items, and contraband seizures
are invoiced and housed. In addition, the Evidence Technicians routinely conduct tours to all the DOC
facilities, meeting with facility management to obtain evidence or take custody of impermissible items
that have either been seized or turned in.
  • Prepare written reports on all evaluations and analyses.
  • Liaise with vendors, independent labs, and other city law enforcement entities as required.
  • Assist the department in training staff in proper evidence collection protocols and are often required
to provide testimony in criminal or other legal proceedings.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and two years of full-time paid experience in correction, social work, psychology, law, public administration or related field providing direct services to an inmate or detention population within a correctional or related facility; or
2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and four years of full-time paid experience as described in “1” above; or
3. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. Service as an inmate in a correctional or related facility may be substituted for a portion of the required experience up to a maximum of two years on a year for year basis. A graduate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in social work, psychology, law, criminal justice or public administration which includes a field placement performing duties as described above may be substituted for up to one year of full-time paid experience as described above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of full-time paid experience as described in "1" above.

Preferred Skills

Evidence Technicians should have a strong investigative background, with excellent communication skills, strong analytical and report writing abilities. Extensive knowledge of accepted methods of crime scene processing, evidence handling, and evidence processing is desired. The successful candidate must clear a background investigation and have a valid driver’s license.
