Job Description

Job Brief

MJE is looking for an Estimator to join the team as part of our Northeast Expansion! (Location Negotiable- Leesport, PA/ Bow, NH)

Position Purpose: Independently develop cost estimates and resources requirements with a primary focus on utility substation capital and maintenance throughout the region; may also support transmission and distribution utility projects.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Prepare pre-approval project estimates based on limited information and general scopes of work, often lacking specific precedence
  • Provide expert judgment of costs to support competitive bid and negotiated contracts
  • Exercise significant independent discretion in developing project estimates and applying “mark-up" and “labor factors"
  • Work as part of an integrated Operations and Estimating team in acquiring projects
  • Assist with the development of standardized historical cost databases and application tools to aid future estimates
  • Attend pre and post bid meetings as required and be able to effectively present information to clients to sell our projects
  • Gather information to determine subcontractor and vendor suitability and aggressively gain the best pricing
  • Analyze special safety and code requirements on all projects
  • Interface with customers, vendors and subcontractors to determine the cost of the project
  • Visit customer field locations as required to ascertain project conditions
  • Perform material takeoffs and develop a written estimate of cost to perform the work according to the specifications
  • Properly turns over bid documents to Operations in a timely manner
  • Ownership of the Request for Proposals
  • Analyze time, equipment, tooling, material and manpower requirements for each project
  • Review plans, specifications, drawings to determine the cost of the project
  • Develop detailed post-approval project estimates based on company standards and site-specific facility drawings
  • Assist with the request for proposal preparation and evaluations, project specifications, and pricing schedules
  • Select pool of potential subcontractors and equipment vendors to solicit their proposals
  • Provide oversight, coordination, management support and technical expertise for all aspects of electrical construction projects in the utility market
  • Assist project team in scoping of projects for engineering, construction, and contractual requirements
  • Assist with the development of pricing schedules and weighting criteria for proposal evaluations

Knowledge | Skills | Abilities

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and proficient in the use of Excel
  • Knowledge of estimating software programs
  • Proven communication, organizational and persuasive interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Ability to anticipate and meet internal customer needs

Minimum Qualifications

  • 1-5 years of estimating and project management experience in the utility substation construction industry (Preferred).
  • BS/BA in Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or equivalent experience (Preferred).

Work Environment

  • Occasionally lifting up to 20 pounds
  • Continuously operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, scanner, and computer printer
  • The person in this position frequently communicates with employees and coworkers and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position over 50% of the time
  • The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc
