Job Description

PURPOSE:

Prepares complete estimates for bid process and/or contract negotiations as directed by VP of Precon and/or Senior Estimator, manages estimating workload and staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare estimates by calculating complete takeoff of scope of work; includes all materials, labor, equipment and sub-contractors.
  • Review proposal specifications, drawings, existing site conditions and attend pre-bid meetings to determine scope of work.
  • Review and prepare bid documentations required for submittal, i.e. special insurance, bonds, DBE, etc.
  • Promotes safety among peers, subordinates and supervisors
  • Coordinate with P.O. Manager to create purchase orders for each project.
  • Coordinates the implementation of subcontracts with the Contract Manager
  • Follows all requirements of the company safety program.
  • Coordinate scope of work with Project Manager, Subcontractors and field team.
  • Interfaces with owner, A/E, and other contractors to provide engineering and cost data regarding project feasibility
  • Prepare budgets and assist in creating preliminary project schedules following awarded contracts as assigned. May include estimating extra work items, change orders, credits; procuring material, monitor progress, cost/budget, revenue, etc..
  • Performs additional assignments as directed by the Project Manager
  • Maintain files of working documents as backup for estimates figures

EDUCATION:

  • 4-year engineering or construction management degree preferred or equivalent combination of technical training and/or related experience required.

LICENSE: Possess or ability to obtain a valid class C California driver's license

EXPERIENCE:

  • Proven experience in effectively estimating similar construction projects.
  • Strong computer skills desired
  • 4+ years of estimating experience in the transportation market (highway and rail)
  • Thorough knowledge of construction procedures, estimating techniques, all engineering disciplines, cost control systems and accounts required
  • Experience with Accubid or estimating spreadsheets is highly desired.

SKILLS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle, required.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, planning and analytical skills required.
  • Knowledge of multiple disciplines required.
  • Advanced knowledge of estimating techniques and cost controls, plus ability to interpret computerized cost data and systems essential.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, walk, stand and sit for prolong periods.

Working conditions consists of temperature-controlled buildings or outside elements such as rain, cold, and heat when working with in open environments, driving from various locations or attending meetings, etc. Noise levels are moderate to loud depending on work location.
