Future Salary Increases

** July 2023 - 4.93% increase to base pay (2.75% Across-the-Board + 2.18% Market Increase)

In addition to the base salary, employees in this job class may receive a fifty cent ($0.50) per hour premium while tree trimming, and a twenty-five cents ($0.25) per hour premium while operating a motor sweeper.


The County of San Diego is accepting applications for Equipment Operator-Road.
Employees in this job class maintain County storm drains, roadways, and/or rights-of-way to permit safe access and travel by motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, and operate road repair and maintenance equipment necessary to maintain or repair roadways in compliance with design and safety regulations; and perform manual labor duties via the use of hand tools and hand work.

HIRING TIMELINE & DATES
  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.
  • Job Offer and Background Process begins May 2023. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.

PRACTICAL EXAM
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be sent an e-mail notice inviting them to participate in the practical exam between the dates of May 17-19, 2023. This notice will be sent at least ten (10) calendar days prior to the exam date.
The Practical Exam will take place at the Department of Public Works, Olive St. Pit, located at 1049, Olive Street, Ramona, CA 92065. Invited applicants must appear in person to take this exam, which will take approximately two to four (2-4) hours to complete.
No make up sessions will be allowed for this exam. Please be prompt as latecomers may not be allowed to take the exam. Please be sure to wear outdoor work clothes including long pants, gloves, and protective boots during this exam.
The Practical Exam is designed to assess applicants' skills in using the following equipment:
1. Five-yard dump truck
2. Loader
3. Shovels and hand tools
4. Fiber Roll
5 . One of the three following pieces of equipment based on applicant's preference: Backhoe, Motorgrader, or Skidsteer.

In addition, the practical exam is designed to identify if the candidate possesses a valid Class B California Driver's License with a tank endorsement; and without transmission or air brake restrictions. If you possess this type of license, please be sure to bring it to the practical exam.

The County of San Diego, Department of Human Resources and the Department of Public Works reserve the right to re-schedule the Practical Examination to different dates, due to varying weather conditions and/or emergency/critical incidents.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of experience in the construction or repair of roadways which included the operation of motorized equipment such as motor-graders, chippers, forklifts, skid-steer loaders striping equipment, backhoes, loaders, and dump trucks of various sizes and capacities.

NOTE: The following must be possessed at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment in this job class:
1. A valid Class B California Driver's License with a tank endorsement; and without transmission or air brake restrictions, AND,
2. A current medical card.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Equipment Operators work on sewer lines or County roadways, without protection from the weather, and are subject to traffic, dust, and noise. Work schedules may require working multiple shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays due to department's response to inclement weather conditions and/or emergencies.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.

EVALUATION
The names of qualified applicants will be placed on a six (6) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information provided on the employment and supplemental applications.
