Salary:
Equipment Mechanic I: $4,725.81 - $5,744.25 per month
Equipment Mechanic II: $5,346.83 - $6,499.09 per month
Currently, we have two (2) vacancies for a Equipment Mechanic I/II full-time position in the Public Works Department. This eligibility list may be used to fill other vacancies as they occur.

DEFINITION:
Performs routine servicing, maintenance and repair tasks on City automobiles, trucks, construction equipment, non-powered equipment, and other fuel, hybrid, and alternative powered equipment.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
: Receives supervision from the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor, may receive technical direction from the Equipment Mechanic II or the Senior Equipment Mechanic. Equipment Mechanic II may provide technical and functional direction to Equipment Mechanic I.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Equipment Mechanic I: This is the entry-level class in the Equipment Mechanic series. This class is distinguished from the Equipment Mechanic II by the lesser degree of independence, responsibility and accountability exercised in the fulfillment of duties, and by the performance of more routine tasks and assignments.

Equipment Mechanic II: This is the journey-level class in the Equipment Mechanic series. Incumbents at this level are experienced and perform the more complex functions, have specialized training, and are expected to possess a strong working knowledge of skilled mechanical work and repair methods, and procedures.

Positions in the Equipment Mechanic II are normally filled by advancement from the Equipment Mechanic I.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
Positions in this classification typically perform a full range of duties at a level of complexity represented by the following types of responsibilities:
Services, maintains, and repairs on and off-road fueled vehicles and equipment;
  • Diagnoses and troubleshoots routine problems associated with all systems including engines, fuel systems, and electrical systems;
  • Maintains the shop in a clean, neat and orderly condition;
  • Services and repairs City generators and storm drain pumps;
  • Regularly and predictably attends work; and
  • Performs basic welding tasks for maintenance and repair;
  • Coordinates with City departments and vendors to schedule service, repair and maintenance or vehicles and equipment;
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Determines the extent of necessary repairs; analyzes engine performance and emissions and adjusts and repairs; assists with field service calls as necessary;
  • Attends training related to repair and maintenance of equipment and vehicles; stays abreast of new technology;
  • Test drives vehicles and equipment to diagnose, verify work quality, and vehicle safety;
  • Keeps records of time, materials and parts used and work performed;
  • Assists with coordinating the purchasing, ordering and inventory or equipment maintenance parts and materials;

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Knowledge of:
  • Parts and supplies needed to perform routine maintenance and repairs on automotive equipment/vehicles;
  • Tools and equipment capabilities, limitations, and safe operating characteristics;
  • Fleet software systems; and
  • Basic maintenance and repair on a wide variety of fuel, hybrid, and other alternative powered vehicles and equipment including engines, fuel systems, and electrical systems;
  • Safe work practices.
  • Principles and mechanics of fuel hybrid, and other alternative powered engines and safe operating characteristics of each;
  • Equipment used for the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment;
Skill in:
  • Understanding and following directions and instructions;
  • May be required to work evenings and extended hours.
  • Communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
  • Operating a variety of technical diagnostic equipment;
  • Appearing for work on time;
  • Test driving vehicles for quality control and safety;
  • Understanding and following posted work rules and procedures;
  • Following directions from a supervisor;
  • Accepting constructive criticism; and
  • Using hand and power tools associated with the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of equipment and vehicles;
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff, other City employees, and the public.
  • Maintaining work, time, and material records;
  • Performing routine mechanical work including troubleshooting for minor repairs on engines, fuel systems, and electrical systems;

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:
One (1) year experience in servicing, maintenance and repair of fuel and alternative fueled vehicles and equipment is required.

Education:
Equivalent to graduation from high school or GED. Specialized training in the maintenance and repair of fuel and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment is desirable.

Licensing/Certificates:

Due to the performance of some field duties which requires the operation of a personal or City vehicle, valid and appropriate California driver's license and acceptable driving record are required. Within one-year of appointment date, a valid Class B California driver’s license is required.

Working Conditions:
Regularly exposed to engine and equipment sounds and smells.

Regularly required to lift and/or carry heavy objects up to 75 pounds.

Disaster Service Worker:
