General Description/Scope of Responsibilities (Internship):
The Summer Intern will actively contribute to various epidemiology team activities/tasks to gain research and product support experience while developing relevant skills in epidemiology as well as business acumen, strategy development, problem-solving, and project management. This will better prepare the intern for a future career in the healthcare industry specifically in the field of epidemiology. The intern will work under the guidance from senior epidemiologists and have an opportunity to work with cross-functional teams and interact with key stakeholders to understand the role of epidemiology in the drug development cycle in pharmaceutical industry. Pay rate:
Essential Functions of the Internship:
  • Participate and contribute to epidemiologic projects in order to learn skills needed as a professional in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical research industry.
  • Assist with any epidemiological publications if assigned
  • With oversight from senior epidemiologists, contribute to the development of study design, protocol, and epidemiological project reports using real world data.
  • Any other tasks assigned by manager to assist in departmental activities
  • Generate slide decks or results tables that summarize key findings of epidemiological studies
  • Execute non-interventional analysis using real world data sources (such as SEER*Stat software, GLOBOCAN, NHANES survey, Marketscan, Optum, etc), including but not limited to calculating cancer incidence/prevalence/mortality, identifying cancer patient cohort and describing patient characteristics, and estimating frequency of various outcomes of interest, etc.
  • Contribute to the contents for epidemiological sections of various types of routine periodic safety reports and other health authority deliverables.
  • Quality check and validate study results and other deliverables from the BeiGene statistics team or external collaborators
  • Promote good epidemiologic practice when interacting with cross-functional teams or external experts and collaborators
  • Perform ad-hoc literature searches, provide critical interpretations of study designs and results from published literature, and contribute to literature review summary documents.
  • As part of internship training, the intern will participate in ongoing training activities within the Global Patient Safety, such as safety assessment best practices, and also be assigned epidemiology specific training to gain a better understanding of the epidemiology field.
Education Required:
Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in epidemiology or related health science field and has completed coursework in epidemiology. Pay rate: $40/hr
Computer Skills: PC literacy required; MSOffice skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote); Statistical analysis skills using SQL, SAS, or R (preferred); Experiences in using Azure databrick platform and Amazon web services (preferred)
Other Qualifications:
  • Familiar with the use of real-world data (e.g., SEER, MarketScan, Flatiron).
  • Highly organized and self-motivated with ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple projects and work well in teams
  • Understand commonly used statistical methods (e.g., time to event survival analysis, various propensity score techniques, advanced risk modeling methodologies)
  • Impactful oral and written communication skills and presentation skills
  • Experience in the design and analysis of epidemiologic studies (e.g., cohort, case-control, cross-sectional).
