Workdays & Hours: M-F, 8am-5pm
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Supervises and monitors the work of Epidemiologists, GIS Analysts, and Surveillance Investigators in disease control and intervention programs. Implements work priorities and evaluates outcomes in line with program goals. Reports to the Epidemiologist Manager regarding overall work progress and needs of field programs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:
- Coordinates with Epidemiology and HIV prevention bureaus and responds to potential and/or actual emergency public health events and is available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
- Knowledge and experience using data analysis software (e.g. SAS) and data visualization software (e.g. Power BI)
- Monitors and reviews investigative procedures, strategies and data analyses of staff subordinates in disease intervention activities, special projects and programs
- Participates in grant/research writing and/or other projects to procure supplemental funding for state-of the-art surveillance instruments and technologies
- Audits and ensures compliance with established protocols and quality assurance
- Data requests assignment, fulfillment, validation, tracking, audits and the overall logistics
- Supervise HIV data team within Data Services Program
- Prepares reports, presentations, and articles for scientific and non-scientific journals on disease investigations and preparedness for nuclear/biologic/chemical threats
- Performs other duties as requested by Manager, Bureau Chief, or Assistant Director
- Develops strategies for monitoring lab and case data and protocols for improving data for the City of Houston
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. There are no major sources of discomfort in a normal office environment.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Master's degree in Epidemiology or Public Health with emphasis in Epidemiology or related biological, medical or public health fields.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Four (4) years of professional experience in epidemiology or related public health fields, with two (2) of the years in a supervisory or lead role.
Advanced degrees, such as PhD in Public Health with emphasis in Epidemiology or related fields, DrPH, DVM, MD or equivalent may be substituted for the two (2) years of experience requirement.

None.
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
Experience and background in public health surveillance, informatics, or epidemiology is preferred. Experience in supervising, setting objectives and goals, tracking progress.
SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED
None. However, the Department may administer a skills assessment test.

GRANT FUND POSITION
Grants & Special fund positions are dependent upon continued available funds. If funding is no longer available, employee may be laid off or transferred. Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
Salary Range – Pay Grade 25
