The Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a non-tenure track faculty-level epidemiologist for the Department of Internal Medicine and Program on Cancer Prevention and Control.

BACKGROUND

Dell Medical School (DMS) is the first medical school established in nearly five decades by a member of the Association of American Universities, an organization of leading public and private research universities. An extraordinary commitment of resources, both public and private, has been made to enable its development and success. The Dell Medical School enrolled its first class of 50 undergraduate medical students in June of 2016 and graduated this first class in 2020. In February 2020, the Dell Medical School received full LCME accreditation. As part of The University of Texas at Austin, one of the nation’s leading research universities, the Dell Medical School pursues innovation in the re-design of healthcare delivery, excellence in healthcare research, and programs in interdisciplinary and inter-professional education.

The Department of Internal Medicine is home to 157 regular faculty including 8 clinician-investigators and 1 PhD-trained investigator. The Department is comprised of 11 Divisions, and collaborates closely with other Departments in the School of Medicine and across the UT Austin Campus on a range of research topics, with a strong focus in chronic disease prevention and treatment. We are partnered with a number of care delivery organizations in the Austin / Travis County community, including the Seton-Ascension system, Community Care, Central Health, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Dell Seton Medical Center (DSMC-UT) is a 210-bed, safety net, Level 1 Trauma Center, and serves as the primary inpatient training facility for our residents and fellows. Seton Medical Center of Austin is a 524-bed, tertiary regional referral center with advanced programs in cardiac care.

The Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC) program is one of the cornerstones of the LCI. CPC currently includes 8 investigators who have garnered over $8 million in grant funding in the past 5 years. The program is co-led by Dr. Michael Pignone, Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine and Dr. Navkiran Shokar, Chair of the Department of Population Health. The successful candidate would have the opportunity for membership in CPC and opportunities for collaboration with CPC faculty.

JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking a quantitatively-focused doctorally-trained epidemiologist to perform independent and collaborative research in chronic disease prevention and treatment, with a strong focus in health equity and health services research.

Familiarity with analysis of large secondary data sets is desirable, as is expertise in use of advanced statistical software and techniques. The successful candidate will be expected to have skill in data visualization and in the dissemination of scholarly products, including regional and national presentations and peer-reviewed journal articles. Collaboration with department researchers and community partners is essential.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Summarize data and research findings and publish results in research journals.
  • Supervise masters-level research staff and data managers.
  • Plan, direct and conduct specialized and advanced research and assist faculty in their applying for extramural grants and contracts.
  • The candidate will also be encouraged to develop research projects and apply for a funding opportunities as co-investigator and potentially as principal investigator.
  • Evaluate and analyze data.
  • The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate as co-investigator in multiple studies with other department faculty and to lead projects from study design and implementation to data collection, analysis, and publication.
  • May establish new research protocols and procedures

Qualifications

Required

  • Knowledge of epidemiological concepts and methods and experience in their application to research analysis.
  • Evidence of scholarly productivity, including prior national research presentations and peer-reviewed publications in chronic disease epidemiology and health services research.
  • Eligible for faculty appointment with The University of Austin Dell Medical School at the rank of Assistant Professor.
  • PhD in epidemiology or related field with a focus in health services research or other related public health field and at least 5 years of research experience (including doctoral training)

Preferred

  • Experience in cancer prevention and control-related health services research is preferable but not required.
