Job Description
SUMMARY: Performs highly advanced and/or managerial (senior-level) epidemiological work. Work involves initiating, planning, developing, and directing advanced epidemiological investigations or studies requiring the implementation of policies and protocols related to the prevention and control of public health problems. May plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Evaluates the need for conducting disease surveillance and implements surveillance systems;
  • Initiates, plans, develops, oversees, and directs epidemiological investigations or studies;
  • Reviews reports and special publications that staff prepare and monitors the preparation of special and annual reports;
  • Prepares and presents speeches, technical reports, and briefings;
  • Performs related work as assigned.
  • Designs data collection, data management, data evaluation, and data dissemination processes for epidemiologic investigations or studies;
  • Develops educational materials and training and operational manuals used in implementing epidemiology programs;
  • May plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others;
  • Develops and participates in conducting educational programs on major public health issues;
  • Consults with hospital administrators, physicians, state and national organizations, and others on the epidemiology of diseases;
  • Provides epidemiological information to the general public and news media;
  • Serves as the senior subject area expert in an epidemiologic focus area;
  • Develops recommendations to management on the budget, grants or contracts, staffing needs, and policies and procedures; and prepares funding proposals;


QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an accredited university with a master\'s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics or related field with and additional year of experience in epidemiology, communicable/infectious disease investigation and control, or biostatistics. Valid current driver\'s license KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of:


  • Application of some knowledge of practical applications of epidemiological investigative procedures;
  • Application of considerable knowledge of medical terminology, theories, practices, standard principles and methods of epidemiology and related biostatistics necessary for epidemiological investigations, data analyses and disease control;
  • Principles and methods of epidemiology and related biostatistics;
  • Plan, develop and oversee disease surveillance programs;
  • Application of good knowledge of infectious, communicable, occupational, and environmental diseases and injuries;
  • Occupational and environmental diseases or injuries;
  • Infectious diseases, adverse reproductive outcomes, cancer, or other chronic diseases;
  • Clear, concise oral and written communication to prepare and present reports;
  • Application of good knowledge of public relations practices;
  • Interpret diagnostic laboratory results and information from medical charts.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relations with coworkers, officials, other departments and the public;
  • Organize and prioritize workload and meet deadlines;
  • Application of some knowledge of supervisory techniques and standards of conduct;
  • Application of considerable knowledge of public health practices, principles, programs, organizations, methods, goals, and objectives;

Physical Requirements
