Description

Stantec is an international, multidisciplinary firm, providing services to a wide base of clients across the globe. Our environmental group in Coral Gables, Florida is seeking an Environmental Specialist to join our Team. Our group is dedicated to managing the environmental components of projects for Federal, State and local agency clients, primarily within the South Florida region, with a heavy focus on transportation projects. We provide our clients with a wide range of services including NEPA compliance and document preparation, natural resource assessments and permitting, Phase I contamination assessments, permit compliance oversight during construction, ecosystem restoration design and construction, environmental planning and design services, and sea level rise analyses.

Your Opportunity

We are seeking an entry to junior level Environmental Specialist to work on a variety of projects related to our work with the Florida Department of Transportation and other clients. The position is based out of our Coral Gables Office and will require in-person work from our client’s office in Miami-Dade County, Florida. In-person requirements vary based on our group’s and clients’ needs. The qualified candidate will be a highly motivated and organized individual, capable of handling the demands of multiple priorities for various clients and projects. Prior experience with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the FDOT Project Development and Environment (PD&E) manual, design plan/blueprint reading, technical report preparation, benthic surveys, wetland delineation, and/or GIS is highly favorable.

Your Key Responsibilities

You will be required to work primarily in an office setting, but must have the ability to conduct field surveys, when assigned. You will provide environmental impact review services to help with transportation projects including but not limited to bridge rehabilitation/replacements, culvert replacements, roadway improvements, and safety improvement projects. You will assist and lead in NEPA/PD&E compliance by reviewing design plans and environmental resource databases; conducting environmental impact analyses, including biological, cultural, and physical resources impact assessments; preparing documentation for a wide range of transportation projects, as assigned by the client and your supervisor.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Technical report and memorandum writing
  • Take initiative, resolve problems, and create improved procedures to ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective, safe, and efficient manner
  • Identification of potential environmental impacts through reviews of engineering plans, aerials, and GIS databases
  • Potential to assist with wildlife surveys and preparing wildlife survey reports
  • Effective communication with colleagues, clients, and agency personnel
  • Maintain Stantec’s high standard of quality control and quality assurance.
  • Potential to assist with wetland delineations, functional assessments, and documentation
  • Synthesize data from multiple sources, use professional judgement in providing recommendations and conclusions supported by data
  • Communicate regularly with the project manager and your supervisor to ensure that project schedules are met.
  • Identify and resolve problems in creative ways.
  • Potential to assist with wetland mitigation monitoring and reporting
  • Benthic/marine resource surveys and preparing benthic/marine resource survey reports

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and technical writing
  • May require working long field days outdoors, sometimes under rigorous conditions (e.g., hot and/or rainy weather, remote areas, under water, in a wide variety of habitats).
  • Scuba certification by a recognized agency and scientific diving experience to collect scientific data
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to drive corporate vehicles including a full size pickup truck safely
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational and task scheduling skills.
  • Must be disciplined and motivated in producing high-quality deliverables.
  • An affinity for working in a multidisciplinary team of engineers, planners, scientists, and Subject Matter Experts with the ability to work independently, dependably, and efficiently
  • Ability to work in harsh and demanding field environments.

Education and Experience

  • Salary is commensurate with level of experience and qualification.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in environmental science or management, biology, ecology, botany, or a closely related field.

Preferred:

  • ArcGIS experience.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal permitting regulations.
  • Experience operating and navigating boats in tidal waters.
  • Familiarity with the FDOT PD&E Manual.
  • Experience with a variety of NEPA, environmental permitting and/or transportation projects in South Florida.
  • Master’s degree in environmental science or management, biology, ecology, botany, or a closely related field.
