Class Concept

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate's Degree in Education, Public Administration or Environmental Science supplemented by two years of experience in Environmental Quality; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.

Example of Duties

Purpose of Classification:

The purpose of this classification is to promote the county's environmental and water quality issues, to increase public awareness through community events, classes, workshops, and programs and to stay abreast of current environmental issues by giving presentations which will motivate people into action.

Essential Functions:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Assists the Water Quality Program Education Coordinator in the implementation of a program to educate and inform County residents on water quality (Adopt-A-Stream Biological Monitoring Training) and Fats, Oils and Grease Program (FOG) through various techniques and communication tools.

Promotes public awareness and consciousness about the county's water issues: Prepares and presents to students water quality facts, water conservation tips, and pollution prevention practices as requested by county teachers, libraries, home school providers and summer camps.

Organizes and prioritizes the work load. Maintains equipment inventory, databases, certifications of compliance and GIS mapping as needed. Reads and responds to emails and voice mail. Maintains and reviews calendar for upcoming events. Maintains and orders supplies. Prepares and replenishes topic teaching kits.

Trains volunteer citizens in the Adopt-A-Stream program of chemical, bacterial, and biological parameters and recertify annually each County volunteer in those parameters. . Instructs persons to detect and report illicit discharge. Participates in clean-ups and provides tools such as boots, gloves, trash bags, safety vests, and trash grabbers to the volunteer groups.

Conducts environmental education lessons to children's groups, preparing an activity craft in advance to instill good stewardship or behavior change as it pertains to littering, wasting water, and pollution prevention. Assist with creation of new educational tools and materials (templates, brochures, interactive videos, etc) to inform County residents about the program.

Researches County GIS: When there is a sewer spill initiates a visit to the area in which the spill occurs.

Determines the number of residents to notify and distributes educational brochures about fats, oils and grease to residents.

Operates personal computer and accompanying software programs in order to read and respond to emails, create PowerPoint presentations and Excel spreadsheets for various event documents.

Researches internet about current water quality issues and reviews and researches catalogues and orders supplies as needed.

Maintains exemplary communication and interpersonal relations with co-workers, superiors, and the general public.
