Job Description

We are looking for engineers to help drive our agency towards accomplishing our vision. This Environmental Engineering Associate will support by conducting technical reviews of hazardous waste permits, research, plan, or perform engineering duties in the prevention, control, and remediation of environmental hazards using various engineering disciplines. Work will include review of complex applications for hazardous waste permits and corrective action work plans and reports.

  • Skills relating to facilitating public outreach will include the preparation of public notices, fact sheets, and presentations for the general public.
  • Strong project management skills are necessary, and a willingness to adopt a LEAN process improvement culture. You will serve as a mentor to junior level engineering staff, and to help to reduce the routine technical review burden on our other engineers. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is looking to expand and grow his or her career through our Career Path progression tracks.
  • Skills relating to technical writing will include the preparation of facility assessments, technical guidance documents for the regulated community, comment letters and technical assistance on applications, work plans, and reports.
  • Customer service will be provided for the regulated community, ADEQ inspectors, compliance officers, and the general public.

This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangements).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
  • Knowledge of chemical properties, chemical reactions and treatment processes, and the transformations substances may undergo in the environment.
  • Knowledge of environmental remedial processes and operations, environmental engineering and technology principles and practices, evaluation of designs for structures and materials of construction, evaluation of the compatibility of materials,
  • Knowledge of State and Federal environmental regulations, ability to understand and apply environmental rules and statutes, and an understanding of basic legal principles and agency policies.
  • Ability to balance, prioritize and organize multiple tasks and complete assignments by applicable deadlines; to prepare clear, concise and accurate reports; remedial engineering cost estimates, remediation design calculations for mass removal, and to summarize completed tasks and/or monitoring data orally and in written communication
  • Ability to follow guidance documents, standard operating procedures, and other technical instructions in performance of tasks;
Selective Preference(s):
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental/chemical engineering or other engineering discipline
  • Requires 5 years’ experience (Master’s degree can substitute for 2 years of experience; Doctorate can substitute for 4 years of experience).
  • Professional Engineering (PE) certification through the AZ Board of Technical Registration or an equivalent organization in a reciprocal jurisdiction.
