The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and the Naval Reactors Facility which have proudly supported the nation since 1946. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory has nearly 8,000 employees working at primary locations in Pennsylvania, New York, South Carolina, and Idaho. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory also has an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations around the globe. We are dedicated solely to the support of the United States Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation.
Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is seeking an entry-level radiochemistry engineering technologist to join the Radiochemistry Laboratory. The radiochemistry laboratory operates a nuclear analysis and characterization laboratory which includes HPGe detectors for determination of gamma and X-ray emitting radionuclides, PIPS detectors for alpha spectroscopy, gas flow gross alpha/beta proportional activity measurement and alpha/beta, liquid scintillation activity measurement to support radionuclide characterization. Routine sample analysis support is provided to our environmental monitoring program locally and throughout the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. Additional sample analysis and characterization support is provided for materials development and ongoing infrastructure work at the Knolls Laboratory Site.
Roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Analytical equipment maintenance, operation, and troubleshooting.
- Radiological and non-radiological sample preparation through homogenization, chemical digestion, and isotopic separation.
- Interpreting spectroscopy data and apply scaling factors based on historical isotopes associated with previous work performed at this facility.
The radiochemistry engineering technologist will be an integral member of the Knolls site emergency response team. Occasional work at the Kesselring Site may be required to support peak work efforts during the S8G Refueling Overhaul. The individual will work with radioactive material and wear dosimetry.
Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
High School diploma or equivalent and a minimum of six years of relevant experience or; Associate degree in technical, engineering, or science-related discipline from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience

- Familiarity with general basic chemical laboratory techniques and typical chemical hygiene practices.
