ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN V

Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT)

Total Number of Positions: 2

Division of Engineering

Quality Assurance Section (1 position)

Neighborhood Improvement Section (1 position)

These positions are open to the general public and to all current city employees covered under the terms of the City's collective bargaining agreement with the AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) – (BARGAINING UNIT #01, 03, 04, 05). Only employees currently in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under direction, performs progressive and responsible engineering work on a variety of engineering projects in the field, office and laboratory and performs other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Quality Assurance Section:

  • May consult with other departments and agencies to coordinate personnel engaged in project engineering activities.
  • Instructs and trains subordinate personnel in good materials practices and procedures.
  • Assists in close-out of material inspection requirements on City, State and Federally funded projects.
  • Reviews material submittals for CDOT construction projects.
  • Prepares reports on the status and costs of engineering projects within the Quality Assurance Program
  • Recommends various courses of action to correct material deficiencies.
  • May research new materials, techniques, and software for use in engineering projects
  • Provides technical information at hearings and legal proceedings, as needed.
  • Monitors construction site activities related to material placements.
  • Reviews construction plans and specifications to assist in field inspection activities and pre-pour/pre-placement meetings.
  • Reviews payment vouchers submitted by engineering and construction firms ensuring payment requests reflect completed work according to contract specifications.

Neighborhood Improvement Section:

  • Coordinate, supervises, and assists technical and field personnel in phases of construction, insuring proper work performance in compliance with City specifications and construction standards.
  • Review 311 sidewalk complaints and recommend various courses of action to correct problems and eliminate complaints.
  • Provide assistance to the public as required. Correspond with area residents and business representatives to discuss concerns and problems.
  • Conducts field surveys to obtain information necessary for preparation of construction plans for various street improvement projects.
  • Assist with all aspects of various design and construction programs.
  • Review 311 sidewalk complaint inquiries and enter data as required.
  • Instructs and trains subordinate personnel in good engineering practices and procedures.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Assist in the preparation of contracts, plans, specifications, estimates, and proposals for various street improvement projects.
  • Provides technical information at hearings and legal proceedings.

Qualifications
  • Four years of paraprofessional engineering experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Licensure, Certification or other Qualifications

  • A valid State of Illinois driver’s license is required.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected. The interviewed bidders possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected in seniority order according to the collective bargaining agreement.

Preference will be given to external candidates possessing the following:

  • Previous work experience in the design or management of DOT or CDOT construction projects
  • Knowledge of IDOT’s documentation and design/construction standards.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office including Excel and Outlook.
