A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN EMPLOYMENT SPECIALIST


A day in the life of an Employment Specialist at Families First is a rewarding and fulfilling experience. As you start your day, you feel a sense of excitement and purpose, knowing that you are making a real difference in the lives of vocational rehabilitation program participants. You start by establishing trust and rapport with each participant, making them feel comfortable and valued right from the start. Through comprehensive intakes, you explore their needs, strengths, interests, aptitudes, experience, and capabilities, helping them gain a deeper understanding of themselves and identify the right career path.


In this job placement role, you work hand-in-hand with participants to jointly develop a service plan known as a Family Contract Amendment (FCA) that outlines their short-term and long-term employment and other goals. With your guidance and support, participants feel empowered and confident in their ability to achieve success. As a job coach, you meet with participants regularly, at least once a month, document progress toward their goals, and provide ongoing orientation to ensure they're clear on their TANF and program requirements.


Building effective partnerships with external providers is a crucial part of your job as an Employment Specialist. You work tirelessly to ensure that participants have access to and utilize needed services and supports, so they can achieve their employment and other goals. Your exceptional record-keeping skills as a job coach come in handy as you document all communication and contact with participants and external partners in FedcapCARES.


You also make requests for needed support services, such as childcare, transportation, and educational services, to the Office of Family Independence (OFI) Support Services Unit in accordance with policies and procedures to assist participants with achieving their FCA requirements. When working in this job placement role, you uphold all agency policies and expectations in performing your job, and you use data from FedcapCARES to plan your daily and weekly tasks.

Qualifications For An Employment Specialist


  • Valid driver's license
  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience


Fluency in Arabic, Portuguese, Somali, French, or Lingala is a plus. We would love for this job placement specialist to have previous experience in the employment services field.
