Job Description


Under general supervision performs pre-employment health assessments on all incoming UMMS employees; order, perform and interpret routine serologic testing; perform and interpret TB skin tests; administer vaccines as needed; appropriately screen and refer Worker’s Compensation patients; assist in the monitoring of employees with blood/body fluid exposures, including counseling of employees, investigating exposures to ensure appropriate testing is conducted, identification and reporting of safety issues and appropriate consultation with physicians. Conduct investigations of employee exposures to other infectious illnesses. All registered nurses working within UMMS shall follow the guidelines for professional practice promulgated by the Maryland Nursing Board. Any need for interpretation of the guidelines will be the responsibility of the UMMS Vice President of Nursing or his/her designee.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

  • Performs and interprets routine serologic testing (for pre-employment and employee exposure purposes) including but not limited to Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella titres, Hepatitis B Antibody and Antigen, Hepatitis C Antibody, HIV Antibody and drug testing.
    • Administers Hepatitis B vaccine to all corporate employees who request tie vaccinations or have them sign a Declination Form after education about the disease and vaccine as required by OSHA/MOSHA. Administer other vaccines as appropriate.
    • Ensures that appropriate forms/consents are placed in the employee’s confidential medical record and, if needed, appropriate forms are submitted for Worker’s Compensation claim processing.
    • Records test results appropriately.
  • Ensures that appropriate forms are completed and placed in the confidential employee health record.

  • Performs TB skin tests on all employees having contact in direct patient care areas or because of an exposure per TB exposure policy.
  • Appropriately screens and refers all employees being seen for Worker’s Compensation claims.
    • Screens employees who have been referred for Worker’s Compensation visits.
    • Ensures adequate documentation for each visit and that all forms are complete and accurate prior to being placed in the employee’s confidential medical record.

  • Conducts pre-employment health reviews on all incoming UMMS employees.

  • Attends and participates in in-service/outside educational training for professional development.
    • Attends departmental meetings and participates on other committees as assigned.

  • Assists with the administration of treatment after exposures which may include immune globulin, Hepatitis B vaccine, PPD skin testing and/or tetanus in accordance with US Public Health Service Guidelines and the CDC.
  • Conducts educational meetings on employee health topics.
  • Screens employees who have been referred for Worker’s Compensation visits.
  • Assists in the investigation of employee exposures, including communicable diseases and recommends proper handling of exposed/non-exposed persons to such diseases. Assists with counseling employees after blood/body fluid exposures and obtaining proper legal consent necessary to perform HIV testing in accordance with departmental procedures and Maryland law.
    • Consults with employees via telephone and/or in person concerning employee health issues.
    • Conducts educational meetings on employee health topics.

Qualifications
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited School of Nursing or enrollment in BSN program is preferred, or equivalent education and experience which demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the functions described in this description. Current licensure in the State of Maryland, or eligibility for licensure, is required.
  • Knowledge and ability to provide interpretation of laboratory results and infectious disease processes to employees.
  • Knowledge of computer applications and of personal computer systems is recommended.
  • Ability to respond, investigate, identify and problem-solve Employee Health issues that require immediate and decisive action pertinent to employee job activities.
  • A minimum of three years of direct patient care experience as an RN is required.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in unit or division policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated skills in performing assessments and health history reviews required.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are required to interact with patients, departmental units and medical staff regarding employee health procedures.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in a clinical/hospital environment.
  • There is potential for regular exposure to employees possessing infectious diseases in the work environment; requires observance of "Universal Precautions" by wearing gloves, goggles, and mask, as required.
  • Weekend, shift work, on-call, holiday and overtime may be required.
