This position is responsible for registration of patients entering the emergency department and some other areas of the hospital for outpatient services. Is responsible for gathering all demographic and insurance data into the medical software. Understands and can prepare all necessary forms for registration. Follows all privacy guidelines. Communicates effectively with patients and clinical staff to insure proper care of all patients.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Gathers, verifies and enters accurate demographic and financial data on patients registered either at the registration station, via bedside using Windows on Wheels or using manual forms.
2. Correctly checks for prior medical record numbers to insure limited duplication of patient charts occur.
3. Obtains consents, assignment of benefits and any other forms needed for registration of Emergency room patients and other outpatient departments.
4. Obtains copies of Identification information, insurance cards and correctly scans them into the correct area in the medical software.
5. Provides patients with information required by federal mandates, i.e., Patient Rights and Responsible, Advance Care Directives, and if applicable discharge messages from Medicare.
6. Understands and completes the Medicare secondary payer questionnaire for all Medicare primary and secondary insurance holders.
7. Knows and can follow Emergency room downtime procedures for medical software downtime.
8. Completes the Veterans administration patient seen form and faxes it to the admission staff at 195 McGregor St..
9. Registers direct admissions and observation patients as directed by the admission log and transfers. .
10. Plays an important role in the Revenue Cycle by understanding various types of insurances and how to enter them in the correct order in the software.
11. Reviews posted material and participates in staff meetings.
12. Focuses on customer service, treating patients and all staff in a courteous and professional manner.
13. Participates in appropriate role in disasters, fire drills, fires and other emergency situations.
14. Practices infection control through adherence to department and hospital policies and procedures.
15. Exercises care in the operation and use of equipment and reference materials. Performs routine maintenance to ensure continued functioning of equipment. Maintains work area in a clean and organized manner.
16. Promptly answers all phones and can direct patients to the correct locations if needed.
17. Follows hospital dress code and department policies of no jeans, no cut offs, no shorts of any kind no jogging or gym clothes, no tank tops and no low cut tops. Your badge must be worn at all times.
18. Performs similar or related duties as assigned or directed.
Education:
- High school diploma or GED.
Experience:
- Able to work independently within assigned guidelines.
- Computer experience.
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- One year experience in a hospital, medical office or insurance company.
