Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • Interest in engaging fully in the typical work of a college counseling center, including short term counseling, group counseling, crisis work, outreach, consultation, and training
  • Demonstrated experience providing culturally-responsive and anti-oppressive counseling services to historically marginalized or underrepresented clients (e.g. BIPOC/Multicultural, LGBTQIA+, international students, first generation students)
  • Evidence of sustained pursuit of knowledge and experience working with culturally diverse populations
  • Masters degree plus at least four years of experience, or a terminal degree in a mental health field with with at least one year of experience.
  • Independent licensure as a social worker (LICSW), psychologist (LP), Licensed -Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), or marriage & family therapist in Minnesota (LMFT)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working within multiple systems simultaneously
  • Program coordination or comparable administrative experience
  • Completion of APA accredited internship
  • Vocational, career, or academic counseling or coaching experience
  • Experience and interest in providing group counseling, including both process oriented and skill building groups.
  • Experience providing mental health counseling services to college students in a higher education setting
  • Training and experience in therapeutic psychological assessment

Position Information
Student Counseling Services (SCS) is seeking 2 licensed mental health professionals to fill embedded counseling positions. One will provide services to graduate students in the Carlson School of Management (CSOM) and the other will provide services to students enrolled in either the College of Pharmacy (COP), the Center for Allied Health (CAHP), or Physical Therapy (PT)

Job duties include providing individual and group counseling, psychological consultation, and outreach programming. These positions integrate all areas of work with a focus on students with underrepresented identities in the university or corresponding professions. Successful candidates will work closely within the programs they are assigned and will be provided with supervision and consultation by Student Counseling Services. They will work closely with SCS staff, program staff, and students and will be located in either CSOM or the Health Sciences Education Center. They will also be part of a community of practice with embedded counselors in other programs across campus. These positions may require some evening and weekend hours in order to support access to students and to meet program needs.

Successful candidates will have demonstrated skills in navigating multiple systems and working independently as a clinician. SCS, CSOM, COP, CAHP, and PT are especially interested in continuing to build and maintain a culturally diverse staff dedicated to working in a multicultural environment.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Other duties as assigned
  • Participate in a community of practice with other health science embedded counselors on the Twin Cities and Duluth campuses
  • Provide assessment and diagnostic services by developing effective treatment plans and making appropriate referrals of student clients
  • Serve as an advocate and as a liaison in the referral of students to on- and off-campus resources
  • Provide consultation services for students, faculty, staff, and parents or family members of students, related to psychological issues
  • Engage in committees and other team work related to well-being, diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
  • Provide intake and crisis intervention services
  • Conduct and collaborate on psycho-educational workshops and preventive outreach for students, faculty, and staff
  • Provide individual and group counseling to students to address mental health, career, and academic concerns

More About the Position:

  • Develop and implement new, innovative models of counseling service delivery
  • Provide crisis intervention services to students during the workday
  • Refer students to campus-wide services and programming based on their long-term care needs
  • Provide student counseling to graduate and professional students in CSOM or the COP, CAHP, and PT
  • Create group counseling offerings for students as needs arise
  • Serve as a liaison between health and wellbeing resources (Student Counseling Services, Boynton Health, Care Program, etc.) and students
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with Student Counseling Services policy and procedure
  • Provide short term mental health, personal, and academic success counseling to students through individual appointments

Provide outreach and programming on topics of wellbeing and mental health

  • Create and present tailored workshops and presentations on relevant topics concerning student mental health, stress management and academic success
  • Identify programming needs for students based on trends ascertained through counseling conversations
  • Provide mental health information and support to student organizations affiliated with the academic program.
  • Promote relevant campus-wide services and programming hosted by Student Counseling Services, Boynton Health, Disability Resource Center, Center for Spirituality and Healing, or other partners to students

Serve as the staff expert on student mental health issues for faculty and staff

  • Serve as a resource to faculty and staff who identify students needing counseling or crisis intervention.
  • Serve as the liaison between student health resources on campus and the academic program

Participate in Student Counseling Services staff meetings and trainings

  • Complete continuing education requirements as required by licensing boards and as relevant to the work of the embedded role
  • Attend staff meetings, case consultation, and other administrative meetings deemed relevant to the role


This is a full-time, 100%, 12-month position, with benefits
Salary range: $70,909 - $90,000, based on experience, qualifications and credentials
