Alabama Connections Academy (ALCA) is a tuition-free, online public school serving students in grades K–12 across Alabama. ALCA is authorized by the Limestone County School District, and began serving students in the 2017-18 school year. The school contracts with Connections Education LLC to provide its educational program and other services. Connections Academy, a division of Connections Education, is accredited by AdvancED.

Position Summary and Responsibilities
This position is working with Alabama Connections Academy. From our office in Athens or from your home office within the state, certified Teachers will virtually manage instructional programs. Through use of the telephone, Internet and various curriculum tools they will consult regularly with learning coaches and students to ensure that each child successfully completes their instructional program.
The Math Coach will be responsible for the successful completion of the following tasks:
- Actively and cooperatively participating in any Office of Math Improvement regional coordinator and AMSTI regional math specialist visits and professional learning to meet agreed upon personal outcomes and all school, district, and state established math goals.
- Collaborating with grade-level teams to develop rigorous tasks, lessons, and assessments aligned with grade-level math content standards; to facilitate the analysis of student work samples and assessment data; and to work in partnership with teachers to provide real-time feedback and make next-step instructional decisions based on the student evidence.
- Planning or facilitating, or both, professional learning opportunities that will assist teachers in targeting student deficits; facilitate professional conversations; foster student engagement; assess student learning; reflect on professional practice; and identify next learning steps to achieve state, district, and school goals in math.
- Continuously mentoring and coaching teachers.
- Assisting teachers in using formative assessments and analyzing student work to identify students with misconceptions, students exhibiting characteristics of dyscalculia, and students needing acceleration.
- Focusing solely as a math coach for schools with elementary grade students.
- Facilitating the use of assessment data in all tiers of math instruction to assist in making decisions that will move students to higher levels of performance in math.
- Collaborating with the District Curriculum Coordinator, School Principal, and Faculty to establish and implement a strategic plan for coaching and math instruction to improve student achievement in math.
- Assisting teachers with administering fractional reasoning screeners or diagnostic assessments, or both, for students in grades four and five. The assistance of a math coach may not exceed two hours per week.
- A commitment to all necessary actions required in planning and executing Summer Math Camp.
- Supporting teachers in the authentic integration of computer science and computational thinking concepts within the math classroom.
- Advocating, planning, and coordinating opportunities, in conjunction with the principal, for school-based family and community engagement in math.
- Monitoring the progress of K-5 students in math through benchmark formative assessments at least three times per year and making recommendations for modifying instruction based on the individual needs of students and trends in student data.
- Assisting teachers in administering early numeracy screeners or diagnostic assessments, or both, in grades K-2. The assistance of a math coach may not exceed two hours per week.
- Engaging in ongoing learning opportunities to grow in knowledge, skills, and expertise in math.
- Collaborating with teachers and grade-level teams of teachers to foster the use of appropriate instructional materials, including concrete materials, necessary to ensure that students understand mathematical concepts.
- Assisting teachers in using data to differentiate math instruction and to identify students exhibiting the characteristics of dyscalculia and other exceptionalities.
- Supporting the improvement of instruction with an emphasis on Tier 1 instruction to ensure students do not fall behind.
- Recording job duties and time spent with teachers on a state-specified electronic platform.
- Modeling evidence-based math instructional and intervention strategies for teachers.
- Facilitating schoolwide math professional learning, including job-embedded assistance using coaching strategies, including joint preplanning, modeling lessons, co-teaching lessons, targeted observation to collect data, and debriefing.
Requirements
- High degree of flexibility
- Demonstrate expertise, as attested by a current or former employing county or city superintendent of education, in math instruction and intervention and early numeracy interventions, including dyscalculia interventions.
- Hold a master's degree or have completed professional development recommended by the Elementary Math Task Force, or both.
- Demonstrated ability to work well in fast paced environment
- Must have valid certification in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or Special Education.
- Team player track record
- Strong technology skills (especially with Microsoft OS and MS Office programs)
- Willingness to travel on occasion for school-based meetings, trainings, marketing and state testing events (may require occasional overnight travel)
- Minimum of five (5) years’ experience as an early childhood, elementary, or special education teacher preferred.
- Customer focused approach
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
- Ability to work remotely, if necessary
- Ability to work some occasional evening hours, as needed to support some families
