Works cooperatively with staff members to develop and implement effective educational programs and to deliver appropriate services to students.

POSITION SUMMARY:

School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement and health of students.

The school nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety, including a healthy environment; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self- advocacy, and learning (NASN, 2010c).

In order to provide quality care and manage legal risks, school nurses should know the various national and state laws and standards that apply to their practice. School nurses also must know their role and function within the Columbus City School District and follow the school district's policies and procedures.

The mission of the Office of Health, Family and Community Services is to promote optimal wellness among the Columbus City Schools students and their communities by supporting their educational success and providing leadership, education and support for the school nurses. Its goal is to remove non-academic barriers, related to physical, psychological, emotional and social health, in order to promote academic success.


DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The statements below are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties, and/or skills required. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Employs a variety of instructional strategies to augment achievement.
  • Implements programs of study
  • Organizes teaching strategies to maximize allocated instructional time to increase student learning.
  • Adheres to established laws, policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Encourages and acknowledges individual student accomplishments and appropriate behavior.
  • Performs assigned duties and is punctual with reports, grades, records and reporting to work.
  • Monitors student progress toward mastery of instructional goals and objectives.
  • Prepares and implements lesson plans to teach instructional objectives.
  • Follows grading policies and regulations and maintains accurate and complete students' records.
  • Demonstrates competency in the knowledge and implementation of technology standards.
  • Uses content scope and sequence in planning.
  • Fosters a classroom climate conducive to learning.
  • Follows established discipline procedures.
  • Encourages student attendance.
  • Creates and maintains an environment that supports learning and accommodates individual learning differences.
  • Communicates with parents and provides feedback on student work.
  • Provides curricula required by the City School district.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS/LICENSURE:

Must meet Ohio Department of Education Pupil Support - School Nurse qualifications. Candidates need to be a Registered Nurse (RN) and have completed a Bachelor degree, and possess a Valid Ohio Certificate/Licensure for Pupil Support - School Nurse - Licensure Code - 270800
