Job Description

Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the elementary school principal, to assist the principal in providing leadership and supervision in administering the educational program of Inman Elementary School in order to promote the attendance, discipline and safety of all students. To assist administrators, teachers, parents and students in resolving student attendance, behavioral and disciplinary problems in accordance with Board of Education policies, administrative procedures, rules and regulations, and applicable law. To provide leadership in program development and improvement, as well as in professional staff development. To serve as principal in the absence of the principal and assistant principal.

Essential Performance Responsibilities

  • Serves as acting principal during the absence of the principal.
  • Supervises and is accountable for the maintenance and accuracy of each student's attendance records and enforces district attendance policies.
  • Works with counselors to develop and follow up on a sequence of interventions for students who are at risk of falling behind academically.
  • Works cooperatively with teachers, counselors, students, and parents to encourage students to be in attendance and on time.
  • Coordinates with community and government agencies relating to truancy, and other conduct.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the principal, superintendent and other central office administrators as designated by the superintendent.
  • Encourages staff to continue to grow professionally and to experiment with new approaches or strategies to teaching.
  • Works with the students, parents/guardians, and teachers to improve the social skills of the student.
  • Ensures that student conduct and attendance is addressed according to the school’s standards and school district policies.
  • Attends/supervises extra- and co-curricular activities.
  • Promotes a school environment that is safe and conducive to teaching and learning
  • Implements the Iowa Standards for School Leaders.
  • Responsible for discipline of students.
  • Participates in state educational activities as they relate to the betterment of education for students and staff alike.
  • Maintains an effective parent/teacher conference process and other programs which deal with parents and the school, such as open houses, back-to-school night, etc.
  • Supervises and evaluates teaching staff and other building employees in accordance with the school district’s evaluation plan, and makes recommendations regarding goals, areas needing improvement and continued employment.
  • Assists in ensuring that Board policies and procedures are implemented and followed at the school.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, and works with teaching staff to modify instructional methods to fit students’ needs, including students with special needs.
  • Confers with counselors and teachers to develop individual preventive discipline plans.
  • Assists in coordinating the work of school staff and school district program leaders to develop and implement instructional programs and teaching practices.
  • Assists the principal in developing and maintaining the student and teacher handbooks.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students’ education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Maintains effective relations with parents and community groups; interpret the goals, objective and programs of the school to parents and the community.
  • Assists in developing policies and practices to assure building security and safety.
