Job Description

Requisition Id 10918

Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is a leading research institution focused on addressing significant challenges in energy and security. We are currently seeking an entry-level Electrical Engineer to join our team and support the Electrical Power Conversion Group in the Research Accelerator Division (RAD), Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As an Electrical Engineer, you will contribute to the operation, maintenance, repairs, and upgrades of various electrical systems within the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accelerator complex. This includes HVCM Systems, Magnet Power Supplies, Accelerator Beam Kickers, and High Voltage Beam Chopper systems. Your responsibilities will involve project planning, work coordination, system design, validation testing, and equipment troubleshooting and repair. In this role, you will report to the Electrical Power Conversion Group Leader, and collaborate with ORNL and SNS staff, professional peers, external collaborators, vendors, and visitors.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Specify, develop, and procure subsystems and components.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Provide operational support for the SNS facilities, ensuring neutron production with a high availability rate.
  • Present work at conferences, workshops, collaboration meetings, and sponsor reviews.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop research proposals related to innovative accelerator electrical applications.
  • Plan, manage, and execute maintenance and upgrade work, utilizing efficient work control tools.
  • Adhere to ORNL's Research Code of Conduct, fostering a culture of research integrity.
  • Develop documentation and procedures for design, installation, training, testing, maintenance, and procurement activities.
  • Evaluate existing magnet power supplies, kicker, and chopper systems to improve performance, overcome limitations, enhance availability, and address obsolescence.
  • Continuously acquire new skills and provide training to others.
  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
  • Solid understanding of analog and digital circuits and electric circuit theory

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in generating engineering documents such as drawings, specifications, procedures, reports, and papers, as well as utilizing circuit simulation, mechanical CAD, and printed circuit board design software and tools.
  • Experience in utilizing finite element electromagnetic analysis software and programming FPGAs, PLCs, and LabView software.
  • Knowledge of AC power distribution concepts up to medium voltage levels, along with familiarity with the National Electric Code, NFPA-70E, and NFPA-70B.
  • Strong understanding and practical application of power electronics, electromagnetic fields, high-power semiconductor devices, and pulsed power systems, including troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly comprehend and address complex technical problems, with expertise in working with electrical safety principles in high-risk environments.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing needs.

Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
