Eeo-1 Data Analysis Project

Company

Whistle Stop Capital, LLC

Employment type TEMPORARY

Job Description

Whistle Stop Capital is looking for an experienced data analyst to assist with a workplace diversity project. Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis and we are looking to quickly move forward with the project. If you are interested, kindly include a relevant work product or a description of your relevant skills.

Time commitment: approximately 40 hours.

Qualifications

  • Analyst should be comfortable leading the analysis and justifying their own analytical decisions.
  • Analyst should be comfortable with thinking critically about how data were generated, discussing the systemic factors that contribute to a company’s diversity and financial performance, and applying this critical lens to the interpretation of analytical findings.
  • Analyst should be familiar with and comfortable using methods for analyzing longitudinal/panel/repeated measures data, as well as methods for handling missing data.

Project

The goal of this project is to understand the relationship between self-identified employee diversity within companies and financial performance. Empirical research in this area suggests that the link between diversity and financial performance is complex. Part of the difficulty of answering these questions relates to the accessibility of data. A new data set has recently become available as some companies have begun to release their Equal Employment Opportunity reports (EEO-1) online. Data on the company’s representation – overall within the company and at various employee levels – in terms of race, ethnicity, and sex are now more accessible.

Project background

With the great support of As You Sow, DiversIQ, and Whistle Stop Capital, we have an Excel spreadsheet with around 1395 companies’ EEO-1 report data from previous years (2012-2022). Approximately 43% of these companies have data for two years or more. We are currently in the process of acquiring the financial metrics for each of these companies through the Refinitiv database (These data will not be merged by the start of the project and will require the analyst to clean and merge with EEO-1 data.)

Current State of the project

EEO-1 Dataset Variables: dataset identifier, abbreviated company name, company name, year, company code, sex, race/ethnicity, job category, number, and percentage.

Source Dataset Variables: EEO-1 report identifier, company, abbreviated company name, sector, year, source link.

Coverage Dataset Variables: company name, abbreviated company name, sector, indicators for whether the company is S&P 500/Russell 1000, and indicators for years acquired (2012-2021).

Scope of work

  • Conduct descriptive statistics of a cleaned dataset, including but not limited to: 1) how company diversity varies, overall, across time, and across sectors; 2) how company financial performance varies, overall, across time, and across sectors; 3) for companies that have multiple years of EEO-1 data, are they becoming more/less diverse, overall and within employee type; and 4) how is a company’s self-reported diversity at different career categories related to financial performance? For companies that have multiple years of EEO-1 data, are their financial performance metrics improving/worsening (and how does that relate to #3)?

Project deliverables

  • Webinar participation and other public communication: We hope to have the analyst involved in the discussion of findings on a webinar that will be available to the public. This webinar will be recorded.
  • Report (public-facing): This report should focus on answering the primary question of interest (i.e., what is the relationship between company-level diversity, diversity within job categories, and company financial performance?) The report may also cover exploratory findings, should the analyst identify and vet potential findings that are worth noting. We anticipate this report to be within the page range of 15-25, including citations and graphics.

Additional context

  • Anticipated Hours: We anticipate that this project will take 25–45 hours to complete.
  • Timeline: This is a fast-tracked project. We hope to have a report ready for publication in early September.
  • Support: The analyst will have one supporting research analyst to help with data cleaning, research, etc.

Pay rate: Ranges between $40 - $100/hour depending on experience.
