New York Times Opinion strives to expand the breadth and depth of its audience, while deepening the relationship with readers. The Editorial Assistant, Audience, will support the Opinion Audience team in this goal, while exemplifying the mission and values of The New York Times. Candidates should maintain flexibility to work nights and weekends as needed. The position will be based in the New York office and will be expected to be available during evening hours. The job is fast-paced and suited to an energetic, organized and creative person who is passionate about journalism in all its forms.
Key responsibilities:
  • Craft and pitch copy for push notifications and email alerts
  • Curate and programming Times Opinion’s homepage module
  • Post stories and execute reader-driven projects in creative, impactful and engaging ways on social platforms
  • Exhibit excellent judgment and audience-sensitive framing
  • Optimize individual pieces for search, including advising on SEO headlines and URLs
  • Assist in the curation, production and editing of email newsletters
  • Represent the diversity of voices of Times Opinion on all of our off-platform channels, including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram
  • Fill in for colleagues on the Opinion Audience team as needed
  • Help write, test and improve headlines
  • Identify and share strategies for building our emerging presence on social platforms
Requirements:
  • Ability to meet deadlines in a high pressure environment
  • Keen sense of, and interest in, the social media and search landscapes
  • Strong interest in global news and opinion
  • Experience working in a digital news media environment
  • Discretion in handling sensitive material
  • Superb and demonstrable research skills
  • Ability to change direction quickly as news requires
  • A devotion to the highest standards of accuracy, precision and verification
Basic Qualifications:
  • At least 2 years of journalism experience, preferably with a focus on audience development.
  • Flexibility in schedule, including the ability to work nights and weekends.
This is a Guild position
The annual base pay range for this role is between $74,816.04 and $75,440.00.
