Position Summary
Governors State University is seeking to hire a Level One Editorial Assistant (EA) to be responsible for assisting in preparing, reading, and editing copy for presentation of GSU Newsroom which houses promotional content that advances the University’s mission, values, and strategies. The EA will be an exceptional proofreader and copy editor with excellent writing skills who works closely with the Project Coordinator, Lead Writer and Manager of Media and External Relations.
Essential Responsibilities:
50% Supports Marketing and Communications colleagues across the department to edit,
revise, proof copy for advertising and editorial publications. Collaborates with editorial
teams to ensure copy is consistent with brand standards, University initiatives and voice
across multiple mediums including print, web, social, and digital. EA assists with project
coordination across the University.
30% Assists Marketing and Communications colleagues with researching and writing press
releases to highlight the University’s mission, strategies, and goals. Attends campus
events and programs as needed to craft engaging messages and build goodwill toward
the University. Assists in establishing faculty and alumni directories.
10% Assists with proofing and revising web content for Slate and other marketing campaigns
to promote student enrollment and/or the University’s mission, strategies, and goals.
5% Participates in weekly content strategy meetings with Marketing and Communications
team to create, coordinate and refine content to support the University’s mission,
strategies, and goals.
5% Other duties as assigned.
Other Responsibilities:
Manages workflow.
  • Proactive Leader – Works well without close supervision and demonstrates initiative.
  • Represents the University at various events on and off campus.
  • Contributes to team projects in both Institutional Advancement and Marketing & Communications.
  • Assists with questions and problems courteously and promptly.


Starting Hourly Rate: $15.51.
(This is a non-unionized position. Salary starts at the base and is determined based on Education and Experience exceeding the minimum qualifications).

Minimum Qualifications
REQUIRED: DOCUMENTATION CONFIRMING HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETION OR EQUIVALENT MUST BE ATTACHED FOR CONSIDERATION OF THIS POSITION, COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPTS MAY BE SUBSTITUTED (See “Special instructions to applicants” section below).
1. High school graduation or equivalent.
2. Any one or any combination of the following, totaling one (1) year (12 months), from the categories below:
A. experience in editorial and proofreading work
B. college course work, preferably in journalism, and/or communications, English, public relations or a closely related field
  • 30 semester hours equals six (6) months
  • 60 semester hours or an Associate’s degree equals one (1) year (12 months).

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, English, or related field.
  • One (1) year of experience writing for a newspaper, magazine, trade publication, news organization or writing in Public Relations, research, or Business Communication environment.
