The Dosimetrist Certified is a member of the radiation oncology team who has knowledge of the overall characteristics and clinical relevance of radiation oncology treatment machines and equipment, is cognizant of procedures commonly used in brachytherapy and external beam radiation therapy treatments and has the education and expertise necessary to generate radiation dose distribution and dose calculations in collaboration with the medical physicist and radiation oncologist.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
1. Perform High Does Rate Brachytherapy planning according to the physician's written directives. Works with physics team to verify all treatment parameters are set appropriately prior to HDR treatment delivery.
2. Perform external beam treatment planning according to the physician's prescription. Develops appropriate treatment plans based on the technology available and the specifications of the physician orders. Successfully completes QA plans for IMRT.
3. Coordinate the implementation of new brachytherapy and external beam treatment techniques and teach and instruct others.
4. Conduct study evaluation for brachytherapy procedures at the request of the physician.
5. Monitor the treatment process to assure the physicians prescription is followed. Develops boost or modified plans as needed. Completes all billing as appropriate for the treatment plan
6. Consult and assist with treatment simulations
7. Assist medical physicist in performance improvement initiatives.
8. Creates and updates policy and procedures for dosimetry practices.
9. Consider dose-limiting structures in the design of treatment plans and document dose in accordance with the Radiation Oncologist’s treatment prescription
10. Supervise, perform, or assist in the planning of the fabrication of custom shielding, wedges, and custom beam modifying devices
11. Supervise, perform or assist in the production of molds, casts, and other immobilization devices and their implementation by radiation therapist staff.
12. Perform calculations for the accurate delivery of the Radiation Oncologist’s prescribed dose for both external beam and brachytherapy HDR treatments, document all pertinent information in the patient record, and verify the mathematical accuracy of all calculations using a system established by the Medical Physicist.
13. Supervise, perform, or assist in the application of specific methods of dosimetry including ion chamber, TLD, or film measurement as directed by the Medical Physicist.
14. Assist in the intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy procedures and in the subsequent manual and/or computer calculations of the dose distributions of these treatments.
15. Teach applied aspects of medical dosimetry to students and residents and assigned.
16. Participate in clinical research for the development and implementation of new techniques.
17. Participate in continuing education in the area of current treatment planning techniques and advances in medical dosimetry.

STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS

A. Education / Training:
- Associate’s degree from a formally organized hospital or college affiliated medical dosimetry program, and other training/experience as a medical dosimetrist so that the total duration of study, training and experience is at least 18 months, OR the employee possesses a Bachelor of Arts or Sciences degree with a major in the physical or biological sciences or is a registered radiation therapy technologist.
B. Work Experience:
- The applicant also demonstrates completion of two or more years of on-the-job training and work experience in medical dosimetry and holds an active unrestricted Certified Medical Dosimetry license.
C. Certification, Licensure, Registration:
- Certified Medical Dosimetrist (CMD) required.
- Registered Radiation Therapy Technologist (RTT) is desirable.
D. Other Qualifications:
- None.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
A. Physical Effort:
- Must be able to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.
- Will be required to operate computer equipment for prolonged periods of time.
B. Work Environment:
- Works in a patient care environment with potential exposure to chemical fumes, blood borne pathogens and radiation; exposure to illness or injury is limited when established procedures and universal safety precautions are practiced.
