Job Description

SUMMARY

Coordinates and facilitates outreach/awareness activities and prevention education about sexual assault and/or domestic and dating violence. Facilitate implementation of strategies to prevent sexual assault and/or domestic and dating violence and engage the community in systemic change. Advocate on behalf of sexual assault and domestic violence survivors with law enforcement, criminal justice and emergency department personnel.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

  • Facilitate community education presentations about sexual assault and domestic violence in schools and with employees and/or consumers of other lay and professional organizations.
  • Coordinate and facilitate professional training events with law enforcement, criminal justice system personnel and hospital personnel and interested social service organizations/providers.
  • Cultivate and develop relationships with local religious leaders and their congregations in order to engage diverse religious communities in conversations about bullying, gender harassment, dating violence, domestic and sexual violence.
  • Participate on committees of community-based networks and groups likely to increase awareness of sexual assault and domestic violence issues.
  • Facilitates the 40-hour and 60-hour sexual and domestic violence trainings.
  • Provide back-up to 24-hour volunteer hotline on a rotating basis with the other advocacy staff. When selecting back-up shifts for the hotline each month, the Community Outreach Advocate will ensure the back-up shifts do not coincide with community education presentations.
  • Accompany victims and significant others to court hearings in order to provide support and to act as liaison between victim and state’s attorney’s office, as warranted.
  • Represent the victim at her/his request with service institutions, including court, police, DCFS, hospital.
  • Advocate on behalf of the survivor with law enforcement officers, criminal justice personnel (assistant state’s attorneys, judges, court clerks), civil court personnel (attorneys, clerks), medical personnel (nurses, physicians, ER, health center, and billing staff), and other advocacy personnel. Cultivate and maintain relationships with these providers in order to coordinate services in the best interest of the survivor and the non-offending family member
  • Document and maintain service statistics and client files and case notes in compliance with policies, procedures, and funding requirements of the programs. Turn in service statistics and case notes to data entry worker on a weekly basis.
  • Assist co-workers as needed, in answering the 24 hour sexual assault and domestic violence hotlines and in responding to the needs of the programs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing, human services, criminal justice, or related field required. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered in lieu of degree. Illinois 40-hour Sexual Assault training certificate required. Completion of Domestic Violence 40-hour training to be completed within the first 6 months of hire. Public speaking experience required. A special interest in women’s issues is desirable. Must be able to collaborate with people from diverse community and religious institutions. Ability to perform competently in a crisis situation is recommended.
